Lpg

Just out of interest would a gas converted luxury car be valued any higher than a standard one?

ie. ML500 (W164)

Or would a standard ML500 with say 75k miles be a better buy than a LPG converted one or would the fact that it had a LPG conversion put of prospective purchasers?

Just hypothetically the LPG conversion would be a top end Prins system.

I have looked in on autotrader and noticed a 2005 CLS 350 LPG converted being sold less than the equivalent standard car with 75K miles.

Thanks guys for all your feed back, the guy who is fitting my system (Oxford Autogas) can also fit a Prins system for the same rate but he recommends that to use the BRC as it is more up to date than the Prins (the Prins is using a 3 yr old software/system) where as the BRC is a plug an drive ( or somthing but the most up-to-date system ) I have phoned many LPG approved installers local and national and both BRC and prins were recommended for the E240 Mercs.

There were other cheaper installers but they were putting cheap systems, for the sake of a few hundred £££'s Id ratehr have a system that is recognised and servicable easily at any LPG garage.

To be honest Im not entirly sure what is the best, I guess all LPG systems work as they are supposed to but its how they are fitted cowboy or professionally.

As mentioned before I had a Lexus GS300 SPort on LPG dont know what system it was (probably a cheapy one) but was a dream with no issues at all and was 9 years old!

Are you being told the truth, as their web site states they work with two lpg systems; BRC and Landi.

Prins is not mentioned.

I think they must be biased.

Yeah I had also read this but when I went to his work place he was fitting a prins system to a customers vehicle. they could have been bised but I had been advised by atleast 8 lpg approved installers that BRC or Prins is the system to fit on a merc....Some were charging 1850 for BRC and 2000 for prins others 1700 for BRC and 1800 for prins, the prices fluctuated alot, plus most were asking an extra £150 for an upright tank to be fitted in the spare wheel area, on top of that all the installers had their views and opinions on the systems....

To be honest was really difficult to decide who to choose....at the end i went with this guy he was competitive in price (honest and open, then again all the installers where) he offered to colour code the cap, upright tank included, full tank of gas. pick up and drop off service (which is handy for me) and the usual service and warranty plans.

I love LPG so much, I've just bought another motor with it (a near perfect Range Rover Classic V8).

:D

I am an LPG convert. I have a BMW 540i and an MB 160 both on Prins systems - no problems. The A-class now has moped running costs... 40mpg at 50p a litre.

My w126 500SEL is in being converted at the moment. This is having an older, simpler system because of the mechanical fuel injection. I don't expect it will be as good as the Prins, but I trust my installer and I'm sure it will be fine.

I also had a bad experience with a supposedly experienced installer who blew up the engine on my 89 Volvo turbo by trying to fit a system incompatable with the car's fuel injection.

So, for me:
LPG works
The choice of system is important
The choice of installer is make-or-break

Good luck with yours

John

I'd be interested to hear more about your 126 conversion as I have the same model as yours . Perhaps you could post a couple of pictures of your installation once it is done ?

I am driving my ML a lot more than I thought I would, it's just such a great car....:thumb:

So I have been looking into this autogas thing a bit more and on Monday I'm having a look over a garage that is currently converting some ML350's and reckons mine will be no problem.

They recommended a Prins VSI system at about £2.3k, at my current mileage this will pay for itself over 14 months if I keep the car that long  I did ask about the BRC system and whilst they do fit them and they are cheaper they thought the Prins was much better quality.....

I thought about going to diesel but I can't find the spec level my current ML has for the same price I could pay another 10-15K but £2k for the conversion seems better.

I have easy access to Autogas fuelling stations near me so thats not a problem either....

Still not sure though, I suppose my main concern is how it affects my MB warranty and weather it misfires or drives really crap! The smoothness of the 5ltr V8 is just what sold this car to me over a diesel....:o

I too was also told that the prins is better quality (parts wise i guess) but in terms of the setup is the same:confused:, there are two types of prins 1)what you mentioned and 2) a prins lema ( i think) a cheaper system made by prins. however yours is a V8 i guess and probably need a top system for a V8 engine, just out of curiosity who where the installers?

I can't comment on the warranty aspect, but if it's done right smooth running should be no problem at all. My BMW (4.4 V8) is, if anything, fractionally smoother on LPG.

Will do.

It should be ready by Wednesday or Thursday. Busy this week-end but I will take and post some photos next week.

I'll put them on my car intro thread: http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/new-member-introductions/82866-new-here-my-first-mb.html

Where are you based? You're welcome to come and see it in the flesh and have a drive, if it's convenient. I am in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.

Cheers

John
