M.o.t

I think Brian has a point to a certain degree.

Surely the condition of a 3 year old car that's done just 8,000 (just a figure) is very unlikely to need testing compared to 12 month old rep car that's done 40,000

I think what Brian is getting at is maybe MOT's should be as much related to mileage as age.

That does surprise me Ian. I thought MOT's where solely about Saftey and not reliability.

You learn knew things every day eh?

I think 3 years is about right. However, maybe they need to introduce a maximum mileage. A rep car doing 30,000 per year. 90,000 mile for its first MOT could be dangerous.

Maybe first MOT's should be 3 years or 50,000? Whichever comes first.

Are you suggesting that a low mileage car owned (and maintained) by the manufacturer should not be MOT tested after 3 years for this first time because it is bound to be in pristine condition anyway?
hit the nail on the head Mark, you win first prize :thumb:

I think they have it spot on although going out to 4 years for the first one would be better.

It's a bit like speed limits a lot of the mot test was introduced when we had sh*tbox cars that dissolved before your eyes. Remember BL and Lancia? The mot was designed to catch deterioration in structural integrity which is something you don't see much these days unless it's an older car.

A 3 year old high miler will still be safe my Volvo v70 t5 had 170,000 on it at its first mot and it went straight through when I sold it a 225,000 at just over 4 years old all it had ever had done was routine servicing

No issue with the mot at all its so easy to pass in the UK it's almost worthless. As mentioned TUV in Germany now if the implemented that system in the UK you really would be bitching

I'll get me coat!

You're like my old geography teacher Ian. He also had a way of simplifying things. I hate you!!! :D

So, increase MOT's to 4 years and speed limit to 90mph :D

I'm a big fan of the KISS principle it's served me well for over 30 years.

If it were me first mot at 4 years and then every year, but I would really toughen up the test so it is about safety.

As regards speed limits most are sensible except motorway ones which I would remove completely

VOTE for me :-)

I watch my motorcycle being MOT tested and have a good old chat with the tester. He has little else to do while waiting for the VOSA computer to time out as the actual test only takes 10 mins. Are cars the same in that the tester has to wait a set period of time before printing out the results ? I'm always told to come back in 1 hour.

There no getting away from the fact that there was a big price hike when the computer system was introduced. Current cost is £54.85.

Ousted toward at an MB commercial dealer and we were forced to take a load of new Vitos by MB. These were big basic 109 longs which we really didn't want.
They sat I a corner for nearly a year!
Plants grew over the back bumper, into the doors and out through the roof/door gap.
Took one hell of a valet!

There will likely be dealer that still have the 'old' Vito. As well as the new range it stock which has been with us for 8 months already

Crazy Crazy Nights was alright but not sure about the rest of their stuff.

In my naive youth and if taking to a side street MOT place it meant 'what can we fleece this mug for'

I took my Audi for work outside of the Audi network and my anti roll bar bushes would fail every year... really? Anyway had them changed to 'pass' the MOT. They showed me the bushes which were perished - but did they tamper with them before showing me? Dunno.

Anyway since owning Mercedes I only take it to the dealer and no real issues like that. Or a known MOT place without a repair facility so they have no vested interest in failing it.

The only MOT failure I ever had on any of my cars was a blown bulb...... so can't comment on 'upselling'.

At any rate, I think that well maintained cars are unlikely to fail an MOT test (the various issues would normally be picked up during servicing).

(I say 'well maintained' because simply having the engine oil and filter changed annually at the local KwikFit garage isn't really a proper service regime. )

My jaguar s type se, passed every time without any problems, that's because I never missed a service in 15 years, however I do feel strongly about Government 3 year MOT as I do about some Cameras being a cash cow.....

Well I use a place that charges £35 and does nor give advisories for have the bottom of the car shrouded ,the only thing I have to do is put a legal personal plate on the car,I even got a coffee last time, the place is not much to look at but they do all the proper checks,I always ask the MOT tester,if he owned the car would he do any work on it in the coming months, this time he said "mate that car is spotless see you next year"
