M.o.t

I think Brian has a point to a certain degree.

Surely the condition of a 3 year old car that's done just 8,000 (just a figure) is very unlikely to need testing compared to 12 month old rep car that's done 40,000

I think what Brian is getting at is maybe MOT's should be as much related to mileage as age.

Ant

A car with 8000 miles could have been parked for 2 & half years on cracked side walled egg shaped tyres. Underside rusted out from sitting in long wet grass. Mileage isn't an indicator the brake lights work etc.

Hello Alf, if you have read the whole thread you would know your answer above is ludicrous beyond belief.......

Money for nothing, MOT should be according to mileage not age of the car

Like the 1991 Astra on another forum that had hardly moved over the last few years. The owner was really indignant when it failed its MOT on a multitude of rust related items. Mileage tells you absolutely nothing about the condition of the car.

Exactly.

I read it all Brian. You are wrong.

That's your opinion Alf not mine, everyone is entitled to their opinion no matter how daft it is.......

Although cars are only tested every 2 years IIRC?

Correct, when I lived in Germany I thought our mot was better being every year. I've seen a lot of brake pipe, exhaust and underbody corrosion from winter salt in 2 years. At the time a friend had a 3 year old E 39 3 series with all the alloy heat shields hanging off where salt had caused a reaction with the securing screws and washers and eaten the alloy. The car park where he worked was heavily salted during the winter.

But most have a service Tim before a MOT is due and would pick it up,as with Alf car in a terrible state,

I have noted some time ago that indeed many of the scheduled service checks are replicated on the MOT test and vice versa, hence these checks can be considered redundant.

However, the potential issues are:

1. Currently there is no legal requirement for car owners to have their vehicles serviced in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations, and there is no mandatory registrar of such servicing. A regulation stipulating that car owners must service their vehicles to the manufacturer's recommendations will be nigh-on impossible to enforce or supervise.

2. Furthermore such regulation will be 'manna from heaven' for franchised dealers, thus in all likelihood ending-up costing the motorist overall far more than the £54 (max) annual MOT fee.

3. This coupled with the fact the some cars have 2-year service intervals, while others have flexible service intervals, means there will be a considerable and rather arbitrary variation in the frequency of servicing/testing between different car makes.

4. Currently there is no legal requirement for formal qualification for becoming a car mechanic or technician. Anyone can be trained on-the-job and then set-up his/her own business servicing cars. The standard testing equipment found in garages is not calibrated and measured to national standards. And the average technician may not be familiar with the latest MOT regulations. The result would be massive differentiation in the quality of testing/inspections - far more than we already have...

I think it makes perfect sense for dealers to charge £10 for an MOT when done at the same time as a scheduled service, based on the premise that some of the inspections carried-out at the dealers (regulated) MOT testing station can be ticked on the service sheet without having to redo them again at the service bay.

But I think this is as far as we can go with regards to linking MOT and scheduled serving, for the reasons stated above.

Excellent post.

Also most dealer with charge the £54 for the MOT, but "knock it off" the service cost..... what with services being VATable and MOTS not, hence you get it for £0.

I never pay for my MOTs...... well not on the day. I own an MOT centre... so I am paying in many other ways!

My local MB also deduct the MOT off the next service so no real problem.
Mine's due it's first MOT in 5 months and will probably only have about 18,000 miles on it.
I'll probably book it in for it's MOT and service together so that any problems will still be covered by warranty.

This is another valid point. You want the first MOT and the third-year service done at the dealer's and at the same time - just BEFORE the warranty run out :)
