I've just done an oil change on my W124 E320 and noticed that the new oil filter was a different design to the one I removed. The old filter was a Mann and was open at both ends, the new one is a UFI which fits perfectly but the top of it is closed off with a metal cover. I've double checked the UFI match (25.586.00) and it is the correct one. At the time I didn't think anymore about it but it has started to bug me and I'm reluctant to drive the car until I'm absolutely sure it's the correct fitting. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks in advance.

Shouldn't affect anything, check the oil pressure is ok. But always go for oem filters or at least mann, hengst, mahle/knecht.

Thanks, I'll do as you suggest. Also might give the supplier, Opie oils, a call on Monday just to double check.

The oil path is basically in through the sides of the filter and down the centre. There is no design for it to go in from the top. Usually there's just an "indent" for it to clip to the filter housing cap

as per Grober BUT the closed end needs to be at the top.

again as per Grober, the closed top end has a recess and clips to the lid of the filter housing.

As you put the top back on the filter housing the filter which is clipped to it, goes in with it, and turns with it as you screw the top back onto the housing.

Trust you put the new seal onto the hosing lid also, with a smear of engine oil on it.

Thanks everyone, am now reassured it's ok. I remembered to replace and oil the seal on the cover.
