Hi all, in process of a full rebuild of my M156 lump, have come across a slightly confusing obstacle however. My front timing chain cover had 2 cracks in the crankshaft seal. I have since tried to remove it with not much success and am wondering if this is even meant to be a replacement part. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’ll post the pictures of the seal in question.

Being able to source one - or not - should answer that. I'd not be knocking out the old one until I had a new one in my hand.
Looks like a standard lip seal though. Warm the casting and it should pop out easily enough.

Yer agreed, however the plastic/rubber seal/ring that’s bonded to the metal seal, already had cracks so is kinda busted anyway. So as it stands I’ll be trying to source a whole timing chain cover with a seal that is in better condition than mine as I don’t feel comfortable reusing it as it is. Unless I can find the seal on its own which so far I haven’t been able to. No part number on it either 🤬

Go to a bearing specialist, lots of them around and they can often measure the old one and supply a replacement.

You only need three dimensions. OD, ID (take from shaft) and width (with a bit of latitude). Part number will probably be a six digit number comprised of those dimensions in mm.

Is it possible that there are two seals back to back with a "web" in the middle so each will need to be removed from the opposite side ?
