What temperature does this gauge show in your opinion?

1.6L Turbo M274 engine.

Looks like slightly less than 85c to me, 84c?

I have seen the needle at 100 before depeding on the drive cycle but i think usually above 80

Well I thought it was 83-84 myself, and this is OK, if a bit on the low side.

From my other cars, I am more used to a cycle of 85-90-85 etc, this car seems to 'sit' on 80-85 instead, but this is not necessarily an issue.

However..... this is what the OBDII temperature reads:

The OBDII temperature fluctuates between 70 and 75. It is normally 70, it only gets to 75 after a long period of idle.

I am aware that the engine has a separate sender for the coolant temperature gauge, and a dedicated temperature sensor for the ECU, and that the two are not located in the same place in the cooling system.

But I am still not sure it's quite right that they have a 10 degrees discrepancy between them.

(I have tried other ODBII scanners and the temperature is showing the same).

Could the ECU coolant temperature sensor be faulty?

Today's discrepancies.... oddly, in the opposite direction:

I guess the coolant temperature gauge sender and the ECU coolant temperature sensor are located in different parts of the cooling system.....

...So he buys another one.
(This has also been quoted in "Time Nuts", a mailing list for enthusiasts that keeps hydrogene masers and cesium clocks in their garages just to be sure...)
