on my way to work tonight and i realise that the car has no power... foot flat to the floor and won't go above 80.

so pulled over and decided to restart to see what's up, horsed it and the power band fell flat at 3k.

pulled into my mates and it seemed to clear momentarily, but repeated on the way home from work.

from what i've read i'm thinking maf failure, no hissing noise or malfunctions being shown at all.

advice please? also how easy is it to change?

also is this the part i'm looking for

Hi Lancebond , you`re probably right to assume maf .Had the same symptons on my 320 cdi , changed maf and back to normal. Ecp is where i got mine and touch wood no problems as of yet. There are lots of posts on this if you do a search and the vast majority are maf related.Good luck

Sounds like your car is running in safe mode (get you home) where revs are restricted. Would suggest you get the fault codes read before replacing any parts such as the MAF.

Symptoms do sound MAF-like, but as suggested could be other things.

Depending upon the age/mileage of the car, and whether the MAF has been replaced before it might be a good thing to do anyway. I think the MAF on our ML270 was £52 and it took perhaps 20 minutes end-to-end for me to do at home, so might be worth doing anyway.

Any black smoke behind?

Had a similar problem recently but had tons of black smoke. Turned out to be a split pipe between inter-cooler and mainfold....everyone said there would be a hissing noise but neither I or the garage mechanic could hear one....

The mechanic tested the MAF and found it to be working within limits.....only £50 to purchase and simple to fit though.

Best bet is to get it on a Star diagnostic

it was the maf.

£50 to replace, so not too bad.
