300 CE
Hello all, does anyone know how i make my 300CE faster. Its currently running at 183 bhp but probably less over the years, is there anything i can do to make it go faster, mods or anything i can change to the current standard set up?

Faster? Do you mean more rapid? i.e. 0 - 60 mph or a greater top speed.

Whatever option you choose, please factor in the cost of better brakes and perhaps suspension. Inform your insurance company of the modifications to cover yourself and stand back for the hike in premiums.

If it were me and the car is a good'un, I would spend the money on having the engine brought back to original spec replacing all that has worn over the x 000 miles. Then you'll find that the car would be more lively without having to inform your insurance company. Just my thoughts!

The M103 engine is a reasonably high state of tune from the off so its relatively difficult to extract much more power out of it without spending money. Its a single overhead cam 2valve engine with limited breathing capacity so the way forward is forced induction [ twin turbochargers] or better breathing = a twin cam 4 valve per cylinder head --which is the way MB went with the later M104 development of this block. The only thing might be to free up the exhaust system with a tubular exhaust manifold and free flow exhaust which would give a limited increase in power. Does the car have a CATALYTIC CONVERTER

It would be cheaper to buy a later 320 coupe, but if you like your car here are my sugestions:

They feel alot quicker with a manual gearbox, and are not hard to convert.

On the exhaust of my old 300e I fitted the correct remus back box, and welded a strait pipe in place of the resanator. The engine used to rev much easier after that mod.

A tubular exhaust manifold would be ideal but sadly there is not room because of the steering box, there is a way round that problem but it cost's too much!

You could get the cylinder head rebuilt and skimmed to raise the compression ratio, amg did this with the 190 3.2 amg.

Fit the throttle body from the early 3.0 m104, this gives a slight increase in mid range power.

After these mods, things get very expensive. :thumb:

what price range are we looking at for getting the head re-built and skimmed? i would like to rebuild the engine also do you guys know where to start and what to do? I am good with tools and know my way round the engine bay but what would you say would be a good place to start, what to replace, what to salvage etc? I know this question may sound silly but
I am not familiar with Mercs as this is my first one i've owned VW's in the past.

Whatever mods you do it will cost big money.

I would wager you are not using all the performance already available to you.

Put you foot down more and use the performance that is there - nil cost to set up ! Problem solved.

It seems when this question is asked; that what people really want is big performance with very little use of the throttle - more throttle response is often mentioned - well just use the throttle you have, I say.

The road test I have from Autocar gave a 0-60 in 7.6 seconds and they were very impressed with the car as standard.

When I had my head looked at they did a little polishing, made a difference that's for sure........:)
