Middle of the night, driving home.

Massive fuel leak from the high pressure diesel pump, literally pouring out of a hole in the bottom of the pump.

Has a bolt fallen out or has it burst a seal?

Is there an easy repair or will I need a new pump, if so, how easy are they to replace?

It appears it's this plug that's fallen off the bottom of the pump. Can I get some chemical metal and seal a 2 pence coin over the hole just to get me home?

Wow, what a leak!

I think I'd have that transported rather than risk it blowing up.

Yes they do run at high pressure but on the output side of the pump.

This is the input side - the engine was still running when the fuel was hammering out

I'm hoping to seal over the hole with chemical metal now, just to get home, and fit a reconditioned pump at home 🤞

Good luck with that one - looks like a lot of diesel vapours going on there 🔥

If the seal / bolt has been caught by the undertrays would it screw back in?

Yeah, as above, check those bolts back of the pump, they are prone to loosen.

Piezo system has around 10 bar primier pressure too, so no chemical metal can hold....

Appears to or has?
The emerging outflow is cylindrical and doesn't (to my eyes at least) look to be large enough in diameter to be from that plug and as others have said, the screwed in plugs are known to come loose. It'll be a hell of a lot easier refitting an errant threaded plug than replacing the pump.
