I have just enquired about renewing my "MB" extended warranty. In July, I received a letter from MB quoting me £837 inc IPT for one year and £2248 for two years with an expiry date of 21st January 2008 of my existing one year warranty with MB. On asking about renewal, I was told the price is still current but some terms were different. On receiving the new pack, the one year warranty price is now £1355:eek: and no option of 2 years. Should I take this farther? There is no acceptance dates on my original letter so I take it the quote is current especially as it is under 6 months old, and my car is still under the original 12 months warranty when a dealer sells a used car. I know it is 8 years old, but it still has only just over 50k on the clock with a full MB dealer service history.

Not surprised cost has increased - same is true of Service Plus premiums too.

Might be worth asking for a Service Plus quote. It's not a warranty, but offers a similar piece of mind, and may prove better value for money in light of the adjusted prices.

Geoff - PM sent. ;)

Can you have service plus on an 8 year old car?

Ahhh, sorry didn't notice that. No can't be taken out beyond 5th anniversary.

PM I send Geoff should be useful though.

I doubt the Terms & Conditions of the quote would remain valid beyond 30 days - especially from the motor industry. You can always ask them for a copy of their T's & C's but don't hold your breath! :(

Don't know what date the 1 and 2-year extended waranties quoted in July '07 ran from, but assuming it was from the date of the letter - ie to commence in July 2007 and expire either in July 2008 or July 2009 it would make sense as half the first year's warranty was already covered by your existing MB dealer warranty and an allowance for that would have been set against the first year's premium to give the figure of £837.

On that basis the 12-month out-of-warranty year 2 quote (£2248 minus £837 = £1411) compares favourably with the same product you're now being offered, for £1355. I'd go for it :)

I presume there is VAT on top of that £1,355. A lot of cash for peace of mind. Would you not be better off putting the money in your hip pocket and use it to pay for any repairs that come up? The dealer must have estimated the likelihood of you coming back with a faulty car as not exceeding the figure he has quoted.

Even if I could afford to pay that kind of money for peace of mind, there is no way I would pay it, and would not go for it.

I would put the money in a seperate "car fund bank account" and see how much repairs and service actually cost over the same time period.

Note~ Things like brake pad and disc replacement (where MB get you on cost) I would get carried out by a good independent mechanic, as there is not much difference in anything technical, compared to any other vehicle.
