Hi guys,

Right, I want to know what the difference is between the C button on the gear and the S (I know one is sport and one comfort) but what in real terms does that mean?

Does it mean that you supposedly get more fuel economy if you're in comfort mode?

I have been driving about in comfort mode and averaging about 32MPG on the school drop in the morning - but today I switched to sport and it did an average of 35.4!! What's that all about?? Does it mean that sometimes it's more economical to have it in sports mode?? I have noticed that when I first turn the car on in the morning it helps to have it in sport mode because she feels like she's cold to begin with when I'm turning out of my road and in sports mode I get to pull away faster etc.

(I hope all this is making sense - I'm confusing myself!! )

So....in short, my question is, what are the main differeces between S and C?

I assumed it meant C (or E) changed up a gear at earlier revs whereas S changes up later so you have more acceleration kinda thing. I tend to leave mine in S purely because when in E I find it a bit sluggish and end up using kickdown anyway so E it is for me! :)

We have hundreds of post on this

C is a second gear start and S is a 1st gear start, the C setting is supposed to be a little smoother have one less gear change and a more gentle pull away

This is cars with the 722.6 box

The 124 is different and the settings are not the same

Sorry, I'm so useless as finding the posts I need sometimes! :o

Thanks for the info, so basically will keeping it in S mode actually effect the fuel economy?

C the comfort mode is supposed to be more economical,, but many owner cannot find any difference between the 2

"S" means Standard not Sport ;)

Otherwise as pointed out above ;)

Thanks guys, I actually did manage (somehow  ) to look back over some other threads which had been discussing this. Thanks for the info - you guys rock big time :D

I leave mine in S. Pulling away in C can be a problem sometimes if I'm trying to nip in front of someone. I have noticed no difference in consumption.

FWIW I don't think it will make any difference to economy as the gearbox will learn when to change up in whichever mode. C just eliminates the first gear change so makes for a smoother drive at the expense of acceleration.

I suppose it's conceivable that if you still want the acceleration then you need to generate more torque so will use more fuel in C mode.

C mode starts off in second, up changes are done slightly sooner (unless kickdown is activated) theoreticaly consumption should be better in C, but if you find it better in S leave it there, what really worries me here is the fuel consumption figures you are achieving, i'm in the process of deciding what car to purchase next, with a E class 270cdi one of my choices, however i realy would like better than 35mpg if going diesel, the c230k goes like a scolded cat and i can get over 30mpg on a run out of this, do you get better on a run?

Hiya, to be honest I haven't actually taken it on a long run yet - I too am hoping to get a lot more out of it when I get properly driving :)

I suppose it has to be like that in reality,, you can feel the smoother drive on both my V70R and the SL

Well yes, I actually thought about it and I have to go up a pretty steep hill on the way to school, so I figure that I am getting better MPH on S mode because in C mode it struggles more to do a hill start etc....so yes that makes sense. The more torque the more petrol.

LOL sorry, It'll be a long time till that gets into my psyche....I am so use to saying about petrol having had a petrol car for so long! lol

S- SCHUMACHER MODE
C- COULTHARD MODE
W- WEBBER MODE.

The M on the dark side bavaria car
MONTOYA MODE.

Take your pick
