Media centre/nav issue

2005 C-class. Aventguard/estate model.

A while ago (a year+) the media centre was turning off and on completely at random. Sometimes for weeks, it was as if there was no problem at all.

Then a month ago, the media centre turned off and didn't come back on. A few days later the battery was dead.

After a new battery was installed, it immediately went flat.

I recharged the battery, removed the fuses for the CD changer, navigation system, radio, phone system etc (anything linked to the media centre).

No more battery drain! Hooray.

What's the best course of action now? Replace fuses one at a time to see what is causing the drain?

Look to get a new media centre (seeing as it stopped powering on prior to the battery drain)...

Any advice will be appreciated!

I think that with this system you cannot disconnect one part and have the rest working as they communicate over a fibre optics ring and any break in connection stops all parts from operating unless you have an adapter to plug in to enable individual parts 6o be tested.

When the car is switched off and has had time to fully shutdown can you measure current flow at the relevant fuses?

Err...I don't have any equipment like that. I feel as though I've taken this as far as I can for now.

Thanks for the info, but I reckon it's way beyond my skill set

A multimeter is all you need.

Given that you mention a CD changer, I am guessing that your infotainment unit is COMAND NTG2.

If replacing the unit, you could opt for the slightly newer COMAND NTG2.5, which will have an internal HDD for the maps, and built-in Bluetooth for your phone. There's also a variant with an internal CD-changer if this functionality is important to you.
