A bit OT for which I apologise but these are not nearly as claustrophobic as the MailRail 'carriages' I had the pleasure of experiencing some years ago:
Cheers Peter. Everyone I've told was surprised that I was allowed in and even more surprised that I was allowed to take photos. I've emailed my contact to ask about the Mercedes fire engines etc. I'll report when I hear
I've just had a reply in from a friend at the tunnel. He says:
"There are 7 designated stts,s on either side 2 x Flor (first line of response) we uses these, 2 x Slor (second line of response) local fire stations would use these to ferry personnel and equipment
2 x ambulances
1 x Communications pod
In addition to this there are personnel carriers ( they carry about eighteen people ).
All stts,s are interchange able( the pod in the middle can be swapped,) so I guess there are probably at least two more in the system that are being repaired.
Each end (a and b) have a separate engine but the braking and interlocking system works at both ends. ( I think the engines are 2.8 Mercedes engines but they are not fast, they have been set up to be work horses. The service tunnel gives an impression of speed but 65/ 70 kilometres is fast enough for me"
