Merc A CLASS
Dear All,

I have an A CLASS 160 2001 Model that has displayed the F Fault and is currently driving in second gear only.

I have taken it for a diagnostics test with these results:

P1841 VALVE Y3/7y2 (pulse width modulated solenoid valve 3 shift) is faulty

Fault in solenoid valve circuit (Y3/7y2)
Replace component Y3/7 (FTC electric control unit)

i live in Zimbabwe (where the vehicle is) but am currently in the UK and was hoping i could get spares over here as they are extremely expensive in Zimbabwe.

Can anyone help me or advise me on how i can solve this F Problem and get the car running . I have tried cleaning the gear selector switch with no luck.

Im quite good at DIY is this something i can fix myself?

Some body please Help !

If you have to get the gearbox out, then its a major job on the A Class and very costly to get done here in the UK......usually a fault with the auto box (common by the way) is all it takes to send an A Class to the scrap yard as its not worth repairing.

Over here this problem basically scraps an A Class. The parts arent available and second hand parts are more expensive than the cars value.

I practically hav the same problem as Brian boyd only that this won't, change from 1st.2002 A160 can someone plz give me a contact in the uk to get som reasonable spare part actually the control module or the transmission computer plz n thanks

To ask these dealers to source the part from jamaica It's so expensive it almost value the entire vehicle I think mercedes Benz company should make those parts a bit more accessible not likely cheaper but easier to access

As above the fault is in the valve body/ control unit

The 'valve tray' can be removed from the W168 relatively easily without removing the gearbox or dropping the engine. If the transmission ecu is faulty then this is big £££ unless it can be repaired as a new one costs around £1200 for the part which is coded to your car by MB Germany and not by your dealership!

I have often wondered if a replacement part (either new or used from another donor car) can be coded using Star in developer mode (since DM has the option to read the configuration of a controller unit and write that to a new controller).

I've recently went on ebay they only got one seller from Au selling som repaired ones with som policies matchless how can u think of buying a part for $42,000 before shipping n handeling and if its faulty u should loose all that cash how ridiculious

Brian boyd did you get your car sorted out?

I would recommend you get in touch with Forrera (or on facebook, if you use that thing), while you're here in the UK - he is an expert in W168 and should be able to help, if at all possible.

Here - he specifically mentioned your error code, so there's hope I guess.

fault code p1841 indicates faulty transmission control module and it is repairable.
remove it from the bottom of the gearbox, without removing the gearbox, and send it to ecutesting.com.
for this particular fault they do a good job with life time warranty.
