Car
mercedes ml
i have a mercedes 270cdi (year 2001).

i would like a spare set of wheels so i can fit some winter tyres on these.

my current wheels with standard tyres are 275/55/17.

does anyone know what size wheels and what the best size winter tyres would be.

thanks
paul

Be honest I wouldn't bother.4 wheel drive on summers would manage.Last winter I got myself Explorer with not great tyres on,went like a train in deepest snow.My brother in law has audi a4 quattro with summers no probs.

The reason i need them, is i use the car to go abroad and legally require either snow tyres or chains. i thought the winter tyre option is better for me.

In that case it is a must.
Go with the spec same like U got on at the moment would recommend

many thanks Borys.
I have been told though the when putting winter tyres on a car, you should go with a narrower tyre (for better grip!). therefore the 275/55 should maybe reduce to a 245/255 and the 55 should go to a 65?

i am confused with the differing opinions and thought someone might be able to clarify this.

thanks
paul

Hi Paul,

I do not think you will get a definitive answer on any forum as people have many opinions.
I too have heard to go for a narrower tyre if you are fitting winter tyres. The tyres on my car are 215s and if I was fitting winter tyres I would go down to 195s. Why? Bloke on 'tinternet said so and if you have less tyre face to push or turn then that must be easier to cut through the snow or slush. Perhaps follow your gut on this on. There may also be something in the handbook.

Our ML runs on 255/60/17 - and has done so since it left the factory - so that's an option too.

The 275s are an "option".
