I've been on the phone with my local Mercedes sales guy on replacing my current A-Class. I wanted to retain my Audio50 (for the GPS) in the new model, but only the Audio20 or Comand appear in the current price list.

On a build-to-order model, however, I am able to select 'Mercedes Navigation Centre for A&B Class' - but the sales guy had no further information (as it isn't on the current published price list).

I've undertaken a web-search for this product, but unless I'm looking with my eyes shut I can't find anything on it.

Has anyone come across this mysterious unit?

I should add, that I don't believe it has anything to do with the StreetPilot3 you can buy as an added extra from Mercedes.

It's the current (W169) A-Class I'm changing to, not the replacement (concept) model.

That system is an Alpine unit which was developed quickly to fill the gap left by the restricted supply of comand units.

That is actually pretty poor, looks aftermarket and nothing special. Uses a CAN BUS steering interface to work with the steering controls so it wont work with the cluster display. Wont support any official MB accessories like ipod kit or media interface.

You could just fit an Alpine double din cheaper and it would look and work exactly the same.

That might not be strictly true. Take a look at the following information.

Welcome to POIbase

I'm beginning to wonder whether this unit is a better proposition that an Audio50, or even Comand, in that you can import POI's - and, if you want such things, an added rear-view camera, and television.

Well if you buy the Alpine branded unit you can. The software / firmware on the Mercedes fitted unit is obviously different as you have to get the map updates from Mercedes according to your link and the option to upload POIs etc may not be available. You can pick up the Alpine branded unit for about £930, I know which I would get. Or even Comand NTG2.5 for alot less than the Alpine.

With COMAND you can have:

Rear-view camera
Analogue or Digital TV tuner
DAB
Linguatronic
iPod connector
Convenience Telephony (which unlike the standard built-in BT, will also charge the handset and use the car's external aerial for better reception)

(nor sure which of the above also apply to APS 50)

It seems to me that the Alpine unit is superior to COMAND only in it's ability to import POI (which personally I don't care much about) and by having a touch-screen (which is a feature that I think COMAND is seriously lacking).
