Mercedes spare key for sale

Must admit I always thought these keys weren't reprogrammable? In which case rather expensive for a case swap...

Thanks for your input but it's still a genuine Mercedes part and worth it just for the case and spares alone .

£15 on eBay

Not nice to post that up in someone's for sale thread.

You're also linking to a counterfeit part.

Going rate for genuine MB keys second hand for a case swap is £10

The link is not to a counterfeit part, it's an aftermarket part, that's made clear in the advert, no different to buying an aftermarket fascia cover for the interior

I saw a post on the other side stating the same thing but there was a comment by RMK stating that it is possible so maybe it is? Either way this is a genuine MB product so maybe worth a bit more.

In other words - counterfeit. Think it's being made with Mercedes permission?

The listing even highlights that it's now made with better quality plastic, so obviously they had problems with them before.

I'm not terribly bothered about such things, but it's not valid to compare genuine and non-genuine part pricing without understanding that they're not the same.

They wouldn't need Mercedes permission to make it, I don't remember MB having any patents on key design

Better quality plastic is not necessarily interpreted as them having problems before, I suspect its more to do with they have found another supplier who is cheaper that uses a better plastics spec.

Of course genuine parts aren't the same as after market parts, after market are generally designed fit for purpose but there is a market for aftermarket parts

I really don't understand peoples objections to aftermarket parts. The braking system on my W208 is completely aftermarket there is not one MB component on it and that's the most critical component on the car and the spec and performance of it is far better than the one MB put on in the first place.

I think in simple terms if you produce something similar it is legal as an aftermarket part. When you start using logos/names/trademarks then it becomes counterfeit and illegal

Didn't we used to have no facility for commenting on for sale ads?

It stopped a lot of arguments.

What happened to that?

The key is useful if your key is broken... The main chip from your key can be soldered to the board on this one if your key is broken...

Only if both keys are type FBS3 and with NEC chips you can swap from black to chrome remote.(non keyless go).

You can buy blank boards swap all 3 chips on to the new narrow board and put a chrome case on it making your own brand new key :)

Cloning the chips to create a second key is another mine field :(
