Hi all ,

Was looking for some advice / guidance regarding the engine sound i hear on cold start every now and again not always on every cold start and only happens on cold start never warm starts on my w204 c200 cdi c class , 2012 , I hear this rattle sound it varies the exact sound , however i have uploaded it i have had timing chain checked it is fine and oil fliter replaced last year last december along with air fliter and fuel fliter , my machanic thought it might have been the engine cover not put on right bu this now does not seem to be the case..

I would get a second opinion-that sounds like a classic timing chain issue.

I’ll confess to knowing nothing about Diesel engines, but would a loose timing chain only rattle on cold start up? Is the tensioner hydraulic and needs the oil pressure to build before it takes up the slack?

Get a second opinion mate without driving the car, just let them listen that recording you’ve made. It sounds like very poorly timing chain.
