Hi guys I was thinking. About lowering the back of my w211 by cutting a bit off my rear suspension springs. Does any one knows what disadvantages of doing that? Will I put more pressure on my suspension shock absorbers?
Thanks

Did this with my old Mk1 Fiesta many moons ago. The biggest problem I had is that the spring wasn't long enough to remain compressed within the strut at maximum extension, so I cound't jack the car up without it falling out of the mount. I would imagine it would have been pretty dangerous under extreme unloading (hump-back bridge at speed?) too.

You also need to verify that the spring doesn't have complex shapes for mounting at both ends - you can't just cut off tapers.

Wouldn't recommend it.

what ... cut spring... you are having a laugh!

firstly do you have airmatic? if so then use some lowering links or mowering module

if not then get some quality tuv approved lowering springs.

DO NOT CUT YOUR SPRINGS, not only is it dangerous, its a MOT failure it could invalidate your insurance!

What the guru said......

Are you for real pal ?

That's the sort of stunt spotty Johnny would do on his Chavtastic Super Nova/AX/Saxo/Fiesta/Uno/etc etc

Thanks guys for the advise someone told me that won't affect the car but it seems he was wrong. Found some lowering springs on eBay for £200 inc delivery

Good move bud :thumb:

Don't take any of the posts on here harshly - we have you and the car's best interests at heart.

Collectively, we just know that the "Dell Boy" approach to lowering the rear is not for these cars.

Oi, I had a Manta 2.0GTE, Escort 1.6GL, Astra GTE, Astra GTE, Escort XR3i as my hot hatches!

I lowered my Manta and Escort but I used proper lowering springs in both...

:D

I'll 'raise' you with my MG Maestro with stripped out interior, welded Roll Cage, lowered adjustable LEDA suspension and stainless steel 2" Zorst!

S'embarrassing thinking back now! :o

Both my Astras were 16s so we'd have been 'on' in those days - would out do on performance but a stripped out Maestro would have been a more interesting proposition.

I never saw many Maestros or Montegos if at all - let alone MGs and respective turbos.

I learnt in an MG Metro - which was a great little car actually.

The MG meastro turbo was fettled by tickford, a very fun car indeed, and very rare,
Now back on topic, If springs are cut, there is a correct way to do this, not for a home mechanic though, and I wouldnt advise anyone to go down this route,It make's more sense in buying a set of lowering springs ,even this has it's short falls as the standard shocks loose travel, and bottom out. It is more prudent to actually buy a full suspension kit srings and matched shocks,in the long run it will be better value for money

The handling would certainly be better. It was shyte in MK2 Astra GTEs!

Still like the digital dash in some cars of this era. Very KITT!
