I am thinking of buying a car from Mercland. Having visited, some of the cars have some body damage (heavily damaged bumpers, significant scratches etc). One car I viewed had a rusty wheel arch.

I was assured everything would be "put right" e.g. their in house body shop would paint one side of the car if required and they would ensure I was "totally happy".

Think they have a good rep on here but anyone have any thoughts about this? I am not sure how good a repair would be and if things like rusty arches would ever be as good as factory?

They seem reasonably genuine but there seems a leap of faith needed...

Strange that a reputable dealer (on here anyway) would have cars for sale that are in such poor condition.

What vehicle are you looking at ?

A W212 CDI. It's fairly priced and if repaired properly then it should be fine, however I am putting my confidence in what the dealer says they will do.

I know everything can be fixed and most cars will have had some paint in their lives but even so, it's new territory for me.

Mercland have an excellent reputation and for good reason. The owner (Jay) has been known to go well above and beyond what would be reasonably expected make sure customers are happy.

If you like the car and they agree to repair to your satisfaction then make it clear to them that you expect it to be a good job, and if it’s not then you would expect your deposit to be refunded.

Having bought an ML from them all I can say was that when collecting it everything that I had requested had been done , it turned out to be very reliable and a good purchase.
Jay even gave me a good price when I sold it back to them a year later when it became surplus to requirements . Would buy another from them

Thanks for the replies all and good point about asking for refund if things aren't done to my satisfaction. I have faith in them based on the reviews here however it's a high vehicle turnover business and therefore they aren't going to have stock that is perfect.

You can be 100% confident that you will get what you are promised. Brilliant dealer who goes above and beyond. I had a recent cosmetic wheel issue on a car which there is no way they would have known about. I bought it about 2 years ago but Jay (the owner) insisted on helping resolve the issue - I really do not know of any other dealer who would do that. Was also the best prepped car I ever purchased. Jay is a big family man and there is no way he would supply you a car he would not happily sell to a family member

Thanks. This all gives me some confidence. Appreciate it is far from ideal but if they get everything sorted to the right level then that's fine. Just seems on this one there is a lot for them to do.

Let's see how it goes...

Some dealers do it before they sell, so you never see it…

Jay had detailed on this forum in the past work he (and his team) have done on old skool Mercs that you and I would have taken right to the scrapyard. Probably ended up better than when they were new!

It’s hard to come across a rusty W212. Why not buy a car with none of those issues either from them or somebody else? Would probably cost the same or a little higher but less risk of further repairs and dispute with the seller.

It's one rear arch. Surface rust as it has obviously suffered some damage in the past and not repaired in a timely manner.

The rest of the spec including miles, history, owners etc is great so very happy with this one if repaired properly.

I wouldn't but it if the rest didn't stack up as it becomes a bit of a punt. But like I said, I know most cars would have had some paintwork in the past.

Perhaps you could entertain us with a pic' or two of it as viewed, and then one when you become the new owner so we can jealously congratulate you ?

There are loads of W212 diesels being sold right now, especially with ULEZ etc, it’s a buye’rs market. There’s no need to buy one that’s been crashed and had a bad repair and is rusting imho.

I’d love to see a pic though.

My pre-facelift W212 is 12 years old. Not a sign of rust around the arches. Driven regularly and I have no off-street parking.

Nope, not that one. It has disappeared from the website. It was a bit older, lower miles and a chunk cheaper.
Unlucky chap, u gotta strike whilst the irons hot otherwise if ya snooze ya lose!
