I was at my local autosalvage yard yesterday, and there were loads of Mercs,of various years and types, seemingly they are being bought by the yard owner, and some foreign people are buying the mecanicals and the front panels and lights...??? Anyway,I got most of what I needed out of one of the 6 W201's there. There was one which was strangely specced. Dark blue, with blue MB tex interior, but had electric seats, air con and various other goodies! Also a W124 300E,which I had seen a few weeks before at the local car auction. It's a beautiful light blue/turquoise colour, with black cloth, and had sportline badges on it? Flat face alloys that seem to be wider than normal too,and it is (was) immaculate. On the screen, left from the auction is "Non Runner, make an offer, seller does not want it back"??? There is also a W123 CE,a couple of W123 saloons, and an SLC,various W124 estates,1 with mint beige leather and 7 seats....I'm going back this coming weekend to try and get more goodies!!!

There are a couple of Lithuanian chaps around here buying up *just* MOT-able motors to export back home.

Although the steering wheel is on the wrong side and the headlights are wrong, the mechanicals are worth much more to a Luthuanian car breaker - enough to cover the cost of the transporter.

He assures me that our 5 to 10 year old cars are the cheapest in europe at the moment - so if it runs, take it to Luthuania.

(Didn't mean to hijack the thread  )

Pretty much what I was told.but the person who told me this said it was "coloured" (his words) gentlemen that were buying them..?...thing is,some of these cars were very presentable...Shame to see such nice old cars broken up.

Hmmm.... sitting here wondering if these Mercs are legally being broken or the beginings of another MB car theft breakers racket bound for west africa.

Pehaps the odd real punter like you might help with their cover!

Might be worth a call to your local police station for them to go and check them out.... that doesnt sound like a normal breakers yard to me.

Alot of W124s and W201s are coming off the road now, they're worth so little that it does not take too much for one to be not worth repairing.

Even 202s are starting to end up in scrapyards now, and given the rust 210s won't be far behind...

There's a very healthy export business, so often scrapyards will put the mercs to one side for the Africans and Eastern Europeans.

I doubt very much if this yard is up to anything and worth reporting to the police.

The yard in question has been there since before I was born! The are mostly scrap metal merchants, and don't really do much in the way of car spares now,but obviously there's money to be made here. They are one of the few places that adhere to the SEPA enviromental regulations, and are very concise with paperwork,if you are scrapping your car...i.e everything is done by the book. I've seen old W124's and 190's at auction from £100,and some are coming from there, all above board, but must be lucrative!!

I agree with Sp!ke though, the profile of the cars seems to be just the ones that are getting stolen in london at the moment...

Here's the details of that 300E Sportline, its always been a local car ( I have the handbook pack inc service history etc) Its really really nice, probably the nicest 124 I've seen...now its lying up to its hubs in mud and ruined...

Beryl metallic is great - I think it's Petrolblau in German, which is self-explanatory. It's a pretty rare colour

It'll have 7 x 15 wheels, possibly even forged ones

Black interior... sounds great!
