This and that.
Does anyone know much about Microsoft's Home Use Program?

My missus has been told she can have pretty much any MS programs FOC, but it seems to me that there must be a catch.

TIA

PJ

Well she did get the notification direct from her employer, along with a code number.

So that's it? Apart from post and packing for the disks, she can have what she wants, as long as it has something called "Software Assurance coverage"?

Yes, that is true, the HUP is valid as long as she is employed by her employer - the employer has an agreement with Microsoft.

She will have to pay for the p&p of the media.

Just checked with my company but I don't qualify as we do not have Software Assurance on desktop (only server products)

Anybody who works in the NHS (which is a lot of people!) can use this. The range of software available is pretty limited though, and it's only the very latest versions (can't now get Office for XP, for example).

If I recall correctly there was a caveat, i.e. that you can only have whatever you personally use at the office and you have to remove it if you leave the employer. In practice this is not checked. It is a fantastic deal and many large organisations do have this, not all of them seem to bother telling their employees.

The bank I work for has made me eligible to get Office 2007 for £17

Mrs Doofus has been told she can have (for instance) Office 2007, and
Her employers said:
this is the latest version of Office, Office 2007, which is later than the version we are running at World Domination Inc., so there will be some differences

Yep - that's the point I made earlier. We have 6 computers at home and, at tmes, it feels like a full time job supporting them. I only just got everyone on XP and then my teacher daughter brings home a new work laptop that is running Vista. It, and the Office programs, are not much different, but it's enough to be irritating.

Do you mean MS office 2007 is available for less?

It may be but this is the agreement your employer has with Microsoft so best to remain by the book.

I am sure, you can obtain the installation media from various sources, and just need the activation key - but by paying the £17.31 you have a legitimate set of media from Microsoft all by the books, and all with the expected support.

Just my $0.02

Yep £17.31 cheaper;)

Can you expand on this?
I am about to buy MS Office on student licence for 2 sons (at school) & myself - 3 licences in pack, cost around £70 to £75.
If it is free i'd love to know where.

I use Open Office, which was free. I have several copies of Microsoft Office from 95 through to 2003. However, I chose Open Office for my new PC last year. That's because I don't want to keep upgrading MS Office at huge expense for additional features that I have absolutely no need for.

I suspect 99% of MS Office users don't need them either.

I've only ever used MS Office but I'm not adverse to change. I had seen recently a couple of free add ons for MS Office 2007 which interested me:
1) Office accounting
2) MS version of a PDF creator

Does open office have a small business accounts package? Or is there another "free" accounts package I could look at?
I'm pretty sure that I have seen a free PDF creator recently so thats not a problem

Finally, both sons in 6th form next year doing A levels - a lot of their school homework is done in MS Office products - does Open Office output in suitable format for homework to be e-mailed into school system?
