Hi, my girlfriend brother just started an a apprentice as a mechanic

Only been doing it a couple of months so I asked him to do an oil change on my car

he has however 'I think' drained the trans fluid instead of the oil.

I would of done the same as I was watching him.

We started the car. It's goes into d,r,p.n but it won't actually move and only revs to 1000rpm in d and r.

Revs fine in park and neutral.

Could anyone tell me the trans fluid I need if it is this. And I need my car tomorrow, mercedes shuts on Sundays. So can I get any from halfirds. If so which one?

Also to fill it back up is it the little black tube, behind the filter with a red dot on the top, says for mb only on it.

Thanks for any help.

You can't get it from halfords. You will need to get it from MB. You will also need a special dipstick. See my "how to"

He only works on lorrys when he is doing his apprentice. And we all learn from our mistakes

Could you send me a link please. :-)

The engine sump plug is behind the first underbody panel, at the extreme front of the car and is a 13mm spanner size.........the gearbox drain plug is about midway of the car and is an Allen key type plug, hope this helps you to identify which plug you removed.

Yes, the tranny fill point is as above. Only use MB fluid, you will need about 4 litres at the most .....and the special dipstick, (from ebay?).

While your at it, you might as well now drop the tranny sump and renew the filter/gasket as this is a recommended service job approx every 40k/60k miles.

One more thing until Monday evening when I buy the fluid, can I use the fluid that we drained out? As I still have most of it in a brand new washing up bowl!

I cant see any problem with temporarily re-using the old fluid, I would pass it through a strainer first though.

I use a smallish funnel attached to a short length of tubing to access the refill point

Have put 2.5 litres in just to check it actually moves which it does. Gotta wait for dipstick to arrive hopefully tomorrow.

When I have put correct amount in do I need to do anything like cycle through the gears and tip tronic gears etc? Or just leave it and drive normaly?

4 litres of oil and red clip cost me £75!!!!!!!!

Thanks everyone!

you need to have the engine and gearbox at full working temp on a level suface and check the level with the dipstick whilst in P and engine running at idle, add oil a little at a time until the level is between the upper marks on the dipstick.

Ok I ordered one off ebay so hopefully it should be fine. And oil change is all at last.

Thanks

Jesus Christ how much was the oil ?????. The red clips only cost 65p. you must have been ripped off.

I think the clip was £0.98p and the oil was about £18 per litre.

Trans oil is all sorted, only thing is there is a slight noise when in park or neutral. Is this normal. (Maybe I can hear it more as there is not plastic sheet on under the car ATM)

Or is this a problem is sound like a little rattling noise!

Something not right there, I buy my auto transmission oil from MB and I pay (from memory) around £10 per litre

Just had my transmission drained and refilled at the main dealer (amongst several other jobs). Oil cost was 11:50 per litre (9 units used, they say).

Have you included vat in your price as its added at the bottom of the receipt.
