Have 2 cars both with a set of winter and summer tyres, I was forever moving them around the garage and they were always in the way.

Found a couple of mobile tyre racks online but they were all about £200 and the £25 amazon stands are utter rubbish (bought one and it broke on day 1).

Self build it is

I ordered some:
Found this link to build you own.

Made a few adjustments (bit longer so I can fit 4x tyres per level) and added the 4x castor wheels.

Took me about 2 hours to build it.

Wish I had undercover room, I'd have done the same, but instead I have a wheel stand I bought from IIRC Conrad Electronics for about £20 delivered, it lives in the open by our bins (I figured the wheels would be in the open if on the car, so should be OK on the stand), it takes 4 wheels up to a certain size and is fine. Can't fond it on Conrad, but it's something like this :

That is the one I bought on Amazon and the stand broke when I put my 18" alloys with 265wide tyres on it, the plastic bottom bit, holding one of the legs, broke and one of the disc broke as well when putting the last tyre on, perhaps it was a dud one as they tend to get good review, the ones on wheels are almost twice as expensive and as I need 2 of them I opted for the self build solution.

Is there an issue with stacking a set of wheels & tyres on top of each other in a pile then?

I have a set of Merc alloys/tyres in the workshop stacked nicely one on top of the other with a fibre insulation board in between. Costs nothing.

Doesn't any type of rack take up more space? I'm confused or missing something here.

Is yours easily portable?

I just use my hands, arms and legs to move them. They are right next to where I need to change them though.

I guess if circumstances are different a mobile rack could be useful.

Does it make any difference how wheels/tyres are stored if they sit there for along time? I'm guessing on their side is better than upright that might cause slight flat spot? Although the weight of the car is not on them so maybe less of an issue.

Looks a brill idea, but how about one attached to the wall up above the car? This is what I need as I have a few sets of wheels too.

I’d be far too worried that something may break and fall on the car.

Particularly knowing what my DIY is like.

When I had a set for previous car I had them in wheel covers and stacked them in the garage.

The advice is to store them on their side if on wheel or, upright if off wheel.
Mine are off the wheel (in the garage rafters), so I turn l them every few weeks as per advice

Garages don't (have to) follow this as they are expected / expecting to only have them a couple of weeks max before selling them

I had no space (too many bicycles and other stuff already on the wall) to mount them on the wall but there are many examples online about how to do that either self build or metal frames that can be purchased

This trolley allows me to wheel them all outside next to the car when they need changing over, yes I am lazy and yes I also used to store them on their side in the Garage but they were often in the way and I was at least once every 2 weeks moving them about and just got fed up with it.

Good tip about turning them once in a while.
