I have searched the forum without success, when did mobilo life start? I was under the impression it was with the introduction in 1998 of the new S class, but for some reason Mercedes backdated it to include 1997 cars. Is this correct? I have discovered the dreaded rust worm, only on the off side though, drivers door, rear door and front wing. Do you think it is worth pursuing with MB or should I just repair it myself? any advice appreciated.

October 1998 rings a bell, but I stand to be corrected, ask the dealer!

Even if your vehicle is not covered some lucky owners are getting repairs done either free, or at a much susidised rate.

It is the old adage of not what you ask, but how you ask.

Good luck with your claim,
John

Geoff,

Just to give you some news hot off the press......I've been looking after a rust claim for my sister in laws W210 E class estate. Its a 1998 S reg with 110,000 miles on the clock.

I spotted some rust on the rear tailgate and front cross member in the engine bay.

I took the car down Mercedes and they booked the car in for a day to go over it completely.

Despite being an import and not having been serviced by Mercedes for the last 2 years a claim was submitted and after 2 months of waiting its been approved.

What surprised and impressed me was that the claim also approved replacement of both drivers side doors, rear wings to be resprayed + bonnet+ both front wings. Replacement of front cross-member and rear tailgate.

Visually you could hardly spot any rust on the car, apart from the tailgate and front cross-member, so as I say I have been well impressed.

I also found out that a local P Reg w210 taxi with 320,000 miles and no main dealer history for the last 4 years has also had authorisation to replace front wings and doors, although on this occasion the owner has had to contribute 50% towards the costs.....even so, not bad!!

Personally, I think that MB are taking a very sensible approach to claims that are submitted.

Try.....you have nothing to loose and at the end of the day, Mercedes should have made the cars properly in the first place.

Not really... because it is DC that make final the decison NOT the Stealer if the claim is to be authorised or not. Be too nice and people will walk all over you in thid world...- you have to be firm and comply with the basic rules/guidelines/criteria specified by MB i.e. service history etc. or an approved independant etc.

Hi Flash,
You and I will always disagree on the way to treat folks, ;) but yes, it is Daimler Chrysler that might indeed authorise the final claim, BUT it is the dealer that submits it, with their recommendation.

Geoff2,

You should try to claim under the mobilo warranty as the others suggest. But a word of advice before you take it in. You should examine the whole car very closely and find all areas of rust, however small, especially around the tailgate and move the rubber back around the tailgate lock. The cross members on the bonnet are a good place too. The dealers will only submit a claim for what you point out to them. Also check the quality of the re-spray very closely and don't accept it until perfect.

My car went in for warranty work at the begining of October for 3 weeks, where they: put on a new bonnet and a new passenger side front door, and painted 3 out of 4 wheel arches, along with the remaining three doors and the boot lid on my 2000 E320CDI saloon. I have taken it back a couple of times as the finish hasn't been perfect, which has resulted in the bonnet being re-painted, and the whole car being re-laquered. I finally picked the car up again last Saturday only to find a small chip on the front wing and black specs under the laquer on the boot lid. I was also gutted to discover another rust spot on the rear of the passenger side sill. The car is going back again on Friday for the paint to be put right, and the "new" rust to be rectified. They must have seen the sill corrosion in the bodyshop, but were not "allowed" to do anything as I hadn't already raised it.

So, check everywhere carefully and good luck.

Mark

My 2001 CLK cabrio has surface rust and was inspected / photographed by dealer body warranty rep in September, still waiting for response back. Car has full MB service history.

Usual 2000 / 2001 MB corrosion areas at panel edges caused by dodgy paint including inside all inside edges on wheel arches, around boot lock, top of windscreen pillar. Nothing on the doors or bonnet (yet).

Car is an parallel import so Vlad's sisters experience was reassuring. Strictly speaking I guess the Mobilo warranty only covers through rusting and paint warranty is restricted to 2 or so years so MB is being pretty fair judging by most member's experiences so far. Hopefully my claim will be accepted!

hi

go to the stealer and if they are nice they will take paint sample and a few photo's of the car. they send it off along with your service history and if chrysler approve the repair then you will be called to book in for respray. they called me within 2 weeks of reporting the problem and booked me in. my c200 1998 got a rusty boot lid and its still covered by warranty as they give 12 years cover. stone chips and scrapes are not covered. mine is booked in next month to go to Triangle Sprays, Southampton Road, Southampton, Hampshire, SO40 2NG, they have offered me a corsa as courtesy car for the week they have my car for, i have to insure it though. didn't cost me anything apart from a few phone calls and the boot shouldn't rust for a long time to come. :bannana:

Next bit. The car is booked into the dealers for inspection on Wednesday 30th. All the rust appears to be drivers side only, is that normal. Front wing, drivers door, rear passenger door rear wing and tail gate. I will keep you informed of the outcome, maybe in a couple on months :( or so
