Modified car insurance

Does anyone have any recommendations for insurers 'sympathetic' to modifications please?

My insurance was on the way down, until I discovered an exhaust mod that had been done by the previous owner (muffler delete). So all of a sudden, none of insurers I'd normally use will touch it.

Any and all suggestions received!

Thanks in advance,

Simon

Simon try A-Plan Thatcham - now part of Howden. The instance they arranged insurance on my Kleemann SLK and it was more straightforward and less expensive than I expected.

All they really wanted to know was my car history of similarly powerful cars and how many other cars I still own with similar power. The prices dropped by a factor of three with this information.

I have the Alfa with LV, they’re very good. You just have tick boxes for categories of modifications. The Alfa has loads of mods and I’m paying about £300. (Which is less than I’m paying for the S212!)

Thanks, I tried them - the only quote they could give me was £4786 for the year :wallbash:

Sounds like they don’t want to insure you! I also tried Hagerty but they were more expensive, might be worth a try.I think it depends how you fit within their risk profile.

I'm with LV with all mods declared and I've used A Plan for the cobra but also try classic line in Hinckley.

Just go on CompareTheMarket or similar. When you enter your car details you can select any mods. and these are passed through to all the insurers when quotes are requested. Some companies won't provide a quote, some will give a crazy high premium, but most seem fine. I got several pages of quotes back for my SL (which has a modified exhaust) ranging from £182 (AA insurance) up to £3,500 (Hedgehog insurance). The majority were in the £200-£300 bracket.

That’s normally my process, my issue is that Tesco quoted £750, once I specify the mod, the best quote I get is £1052.

Some of the modified ‘specialist’ places I’ve tried won’t go below £1400. Utterly ridiculous.

If you can’t get a sensible quote then it might be worth adding back an exhaust box. Did you try Aplan (now Howden)?

Yeah, I’m considering adding the mufflers back in, but as a last resort. Tried Howden and they’re at £1400. May go with the £1052 at this rate, might just be less aggravating!

Problem is that unless you can make it completely stock again (original shape/style/size muffler(s) and piping) it will still be 'modified'.

I have an AMG back box, 200 cell sports cats and the centre muffler removed. Been in this configuration for 11 years now ... always declared for insurance, never had a problem.

But insurance is a complex game ... could be some combination of your specific model of car, drivers, location, and being 'modified'. I looked at putting AMG wheels (of the correct load rating) on our Vito and our insurer at the time (Direct Line) said they would no longer cover the vehicle if it had anything other than factory standard wheels on it.

Well, having seemingly tried the world and his dog for a quote, looks like i'm staring down the barrel of a £1052 premium (vs. £754 if the car was unmodified). But i'm not going to complain, I see this as more of a lesson learned for the future when buying the next car.

Of the specialists and brokers I spoke to, none of them could get anywhere near that price (policy underwritten by Sabre) - so i'm confident I've done all I can at this point. I just hope that it comes down next year

Cheers for all the responses.
