Mondeo + Diesel + Auto =

I had 2 Sierras in a row from '89 to 92. Then I started buying my own cars. They were good cars...but... I got them new and by 40,000 miles they were rough.

Horses for courses

I paid a little more for a marginally newer (and less powerful 211) and for the money it would get you a modest mondeo brand new, that probably isnt as well specc'd (auto, half leather in mine, phone, cruise, leccy seats, RWD-a biggie).
I've done 33k in mine. A new mondeo with 33k on it would be worth less than mine, not feel as fresh as mine, not have driven as well (RWD is better, END of) and generally not given me the same level of comfort and safety either.
Do you think it's fair comparing depreciation of a 4 y.o. car with that of a new one? The 4 y.o. will always win. My immaculate 5 y.o. car cost 2500 pounds; what kind of E-class do you get for that money?

My mondeo estate has its faults but it has more loadspace than an E-class (important for what I do with it), returns 48mpg overall, has no rust and has done 145k miles with no faults other than a puncture. A complete service is quick & easy and costs about 80 pounds DIY including gearbox oil and brake pads- try doing a Merc for the same price. It's important on these to keep the EGR clean- this takes 15 minutes every 12500 miles.

I'm happy with it and don't regret not buying the E-class I originally would have preferred.

I actually bought my Cougar V6 off the company and intended to run it for about another year. Needless to say it kept on going and when the power steering cooler started to leak it was only £35 for the replacement part. In some ways I wish I'd kept it just to see how many miles the V6 was up to. It's a shame that Ford has decided to stick with the mainstream Mondeos and Focus.

I had aCougar V6 for awhile and enjoyed it very much. Have had Mondeos but never for long so can't really comment on how reliable etc but didn't find them bad cars. Not in the same league as a Merc but not bad. First Ford I ever had was a Zephyr mk11 Convertible! Great car until the floor fell out of it!!

Mondeo estate 1733 litres space...Mercedes E class 1950 litres.

I find I get about the same overall mileage (30 mpg) from my 2.5L V6 C230 as the Cougar 2.5L V6 although the Merc is just over 200bhp vs 170bhp for the Ford. I suspect its also a bit heavier. The Cougar had an auto box (4 speed I seem to remember) and was a bit agricultural compared to the Merc but that said it never gave any problems in 198K miles and I never changed the fluid once. Unfortunatley I can't say the same for my 7G box.

Forgot to mention that I once were given a 2004 Mondeo 2.0 auto as a rental and it was the most boring car I have ever driven. Slow and very thirsty. The auto was a slow-to-change 4 speeder.

I can also add that my first car, a Sierra 2.0, was great to drive (not in winter!) and took very little fuel.

Sure, it had its fair share of problems like battery drain, interior fan actually died, brake probs and some other electrical gremlins.

AutoCar did a comparison test of Mondeo and 3 Series while I had it and said that by any objective measure the Mondeo was better!

One thing I can't find on any of the major sites is a test of the 2.0TDCI Auto Mondeo as I just had... One would suspect ford doesn't want any journos to drive them...

TBH auto Fords I have driven prior to the Mondeo two weeks back were all pretty awful. So there may be an unspoken deep shame about them in the PR department.

The current Mondeo auto is in a different league. Maybe the PR and marketing department should try driving one.

Some "auto" Fords now use a dual clutch system, similar to the DSG.
From what I've read it's meant to be very good.

As an update, went to pick my deposit up from the rental office - seems the engines "broken" and there's evidence of misfuelling previously...
