MOSTly Bose audio questions

My SL500 R230 currently has the standard NTG1 Comand system. I have the Bose upgrade parts and want to use those, but with a different Head-Unit. However, I'm still unsure of exactly what is where and could do with some advice (yes more, sorry Richard :-)

I have all the Bose parts to install, but what will I then have and what function will each part perform and with what connections. Currently I believe there is the AGW behind the seat and there's the HU in its obvious location. Where's the navigation processor (and DVD?)? Behind the seat? In the boot? Combined in the HU?

I believe the Bose amp connects to the MOST fibre optic, but does it actually receive its audio signals in that way, or are there also analogue line level signals from elsewhere? The AGW? Or does the Bose amp replace the AGW?

Where will the actual audio signals be generated and how do they get to the Bose amp and how many channels are there? I suspect just the 2 (L & R) in the SL and the Bose then powers all its speakers, which are? Main ones in each door plus some (small ones) across the back behind the driver and passenger and the sub. But does the Bose system normally also power the centre one in the top of the dash?

In order to replace parts of the audio system, one has to know how the current system functions and I am still missing some vital information (although some of it is simply forgotten). This is something I've had on the 'back burner' for far too long and I'd like to finally do something about it. But I could do with more information. Is there an actual diagram I can download that will show exactly where the components in my car are located and how they interconnect?

On NTG1 in SL, the BOSE amp is added in addition to the existing AGW. It sits on the fibre ring and gets all it's signals except wakeup (and possibly a feedback microphone, need to check if it has one) from the fibre optics. Permanent power from the fusebox behind driver's seat

You will need a new left cubby hole as amp sits below it.

Buy a factory loom for the amp it will have all the wiring except the fibre optics.

I'm sure there are wiring diagrams in WIS. There will be a diagram showing where everything is located, then you need the amp wiring diagram and the MOST wiring diagram to get the ring order correct. It will need coding to function properly.

Richard

Sorry, WIS? Those are the sort of diagrams that would be invaluable. Just cannot remember what WIS is in order to get them.

One more thing, regarding the audio channels. The Bose amp receives these signals on the MOST bus, but is it sent (from the AGW I believe) 4 channels or just 2?

Its not sent from the AGW, its sent from whatever is supplying the sound in the correct format. There are more than 2 channels (and I can't remember how many)

WIS is the Workshop Information System. You can subscribed to it online somewhere ( Daimler AG - Service & Parts net )

Cheers
Richard

ps, Nav processor in the boot on the left where the triangle is stored.

I was under the impression that the radio was part of the AGW and that the AGW is used to direct the different audio source outputs to the amp, presumably via MOST? Why do companies like MB and BMW have to make this stuff so complicated. Well, not actually complicated, but different - to anything else so you can't do anything with it unless you are in possession of such arcane knowledge specific to only those cars, or even just one car.

Unfortunately WIS requires a paid subscription. Can anyone help me out with the diagrams to show what connects to what and where they are?

The wiring diagrams are Mercedes copyright and shouldnt be copied. You can pay for the subscription for just a short while.

Well vehicle manufactures and I have a very different view on that. I bought the car and it's mine and I firmly believe that manufacturers should make freely available any information about their product that a customer requires. I didn't buy a secret. I bought a physical device and if I wanted to copy and manufacture any parts from it, I can do that by examining the actual parts. The legality of manufacturing and selling such copies like that is another matter entirely. The point is that applying this 'copyright' nonsense to basic information about products they sell does NOTHING to protect them against such theft. It just makes it difficult for customers and pisses them off.

That is my considered opinion after messing with cars and bikes for over 50 years and also working for some of that time in the motor industry. I'm sure there are others who will disagree, but I don't wish to debate it here.

This is in no way directed at anyone on these forums who are an invaluable source of information that I believe should be readily available from the manufacturer.

If I cannot find out fundamental info like this to enable the fitment of their own parts, really simple stuff like the car audio, then I'm losing the desire to have such a car.

I think that if you don't know how it works and you can't find out how it works then you have to pay MB to do it.
Which is of course something they would prefer.
