I have a car which is SORN and sitting in my garage, if I decide to put it back on the road how would I go about getting it to an MOT center.

If I get the insurance to drive it on the road can I still drive it to the MOT center even though it currently does not have a valid MOT or any TAX?

If you pre-book your MOT with a garage and drive a direct route to the MOT station (a resonably local one) then you remain the right side of the law iirc.

Yes as above, you are OK provided you are on route to a booked MOT appointment, or in the event of a failure, on route to a service centre to put the faults right before re-testing.

Yes , that is correct : the vehicle must be insured and the test must be pre-booked .

Do bear in mind that it is still illegal to drive a car on the road with any obvious defects ( even ones that you have arranged to have repaired prior to the MOT ) and that you 'could' be prosecuted for driving a car in an unroadworthy condition , just the same as on any other day .

If the vehicle has failed , you are also allowed to drive home from the test ( depending on what it has failed on - for example you could not drive away if failed on a 'dangerous' fault like brakes or suspension components ) .

EDIT - The comment added by Nisfan about going to a service centre is a 'grey area' as the regulations state you must drive directly to the test centre , and back home , without any other stops en route . However , any reasonable policeman will usually accept this .

Ponteer's point about insurance is the biggie. that's what the police will care more about.

If you think it needs brakes etc and you have decent AA/RAC cover they might come out and take it to a garage for you.
