I have a 10 user licence (2 keys with 5 activations on each) for XP Pro - some of which are used on oldish workstations. I want to replace these but cant install XP pro because when you try to activ1ate via MS web activation, the reply is that sorry this product key has been used try another.

How do I transfer the licence /product key ? We are building our own workstations so dont need a pc with XP bundled to save money.

any help appreciated.

why dont you try to activate by selecting the "I want to phone microsoft etc " option and then entering your key manually?

Hi Steve

I've checked the ActionPack FAQs but can't see any mention of this, other than ...

How does Microsoft identify the computer's hardware? Can hardware components be changed?

Microsoft Product Activation detects the hardware configuration on which the product is being installed and creates a hash value for that configuration. Product Activation does not scan hard drive, detect any personal information, or determine the make, model or manufacturer of the PC or its components. The hardware can be changed up to a point, however, if you completely overhaul the hardware, reactivation may be required. In that case, you will need to contact a Microsoft customer service representative by telephone to reactivate.
... which means ... you'll have to contact MS :D
