On the subject of......

I finally sussed out how to do these. I must admit Windows Media Player was a pain / non event so I have been using SonicStage which came built into my Sony laptop and burned a few data discs for my non comand A Class and a couple of DVD data discs for my comand SLK.

Anyways, I have been reading up on bit rates. I used, (for about 50 or so CD rips), 320 bps thinking that would give me the best quality with the least amount of storage which it did. However, some folks are saying I can get away with a much lower bit rate, certainly for in car use, so I have tried a couple at 256 bps and to be honest I cannot detect much if any degradation on the quality front. My ears are not what they used to be btw!

So, what do you learned folks reckon? Also quality wise, would running at the same bit rate through comand in my SLK be less so when compared to the audio 20 thats in my A Class?

Cheers.

hello!

You can go down to 192k without being able to hear any differences.

If you are not tight on space on the MP3 disc you could go down to 128k without losing any significant quality, anything under 128k and you will start to hear the quality slip.

You shouldnt hear any difference between the two units.

As omega1 says, 192Kbps is plenty adequate for use in a car systemunless you have a high-end installation and even then I would argue that the compression losses would be difficult to detect.

However... If you only want to rip your CD's once and also wish to play ripped mp3's on a good quality domestic system at home then you may find upping the bit-rate worthwhile. If you have a high-end domestic system then you wouldn't bother listening to mp3's at home anyway. Personally, I rip all my CD's at 192Kbps as I only ever listen to mp3's on mobile devices and listen to the original CD's at home.

Thanks to both. I'll give that a go then, just have to re-rip the CD's again:rolleyes: but its raining outside tonight anyway:D. My home system is pretty M-O-R, Sony amplifier and CD player with Mission speakers but the player wont handle mps's so I just use my original discs now.

I'll let you know how things go.

OK I gave it a try, thankyou, and to be honest I could not detect any loss of quality. I tried a couple at 192 and a couple at 22something and that was the same so I spent a couple of hours re-ripping all my CD's at 192.

Solved:D

I can hear the difference between 192 and 320 when stationary, but once moving (even at 30) there's no chance anyone would tell the difference.
I have fitted a higher end stereo which amplifies the difference between the two bit-rates perhaps.

For car use - for most people - 128 kps is fine. Main advantage is of course economy of storage space.
You can get 2.5 times the number of tracks in any available storage space at 128 over 320.
