Guys,

I have a 1991 230e Auto. Recently I noticed that, whilst driving, it would develop a bad missfire and cut out. After leaving it for a while, it would sometimes be OK..

However, it is now immobile.

It starts and revs fine in neutral. It is fine in reverse, but when you put it into drive it coughs, splutters and just dies!

Any thoughts would be much welcomed.

OVP relay or fuel pump relay was my first thought but this business about reverse gear???
MAYBE A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM putting excessive load on the engine??? parking brakes seized? try jacking the car up and testing the transmission is free. I'm just guessing really.

maybe a MAS problem based on my experience yesterday.

Dont think a 1991 will have a MAS R2D2 as injection system will be KE jetronic with mechanical air flow sensor I think?

I'm thinking ECU myself... again just guessing.

Think its probably time to get it down to an independent specialist for diagnosis.
