Hi Guys,

my 202 has died after 12.5 years of trouble free motoring.

My wife was on motorway going to Sunderland from Coventr and the car made a bang and cut out, AA towed it My wife got a local mechaninc to come and look at the car, but hearing what happened he said its not worth me even looking at it as its going to cost more than what the cars worth to repair it.

Im Well Gutted........ :(:(:(:(:(:(

Question is what to do now? Car is 200 miles away from me and i have numerous bits on there inc 18" rucha replica wheels, also the other bits i can sell ie lights mirrors etc

shoukd i get the guy to look at it at least and see the extent of the damage or not bother?
He will be taking £100 just to strip the engine...

Where is the car now buddy. There are lots of forum members scattered up an down the country who could help I'm sure.

rent a trailer and go collect it change the engine if gone

but it sounds like a lazy mechanic why did he not give a quick look to help you out

or dose he want the nice toys on it

It must surely be worth some further investigation, there are usually a few reasonably priced engines kicking about on ebay.

get a another opinion from someone who actually has seen the car!!

dont jump the gun!

Could be anything to be honest - and may be quite simple. wost scenario, if you really like the car, then drop a 2nd hand identical engine in.

Everythings repairable, and if you do a bit of research, things can be done a lot cheaper than you'd expect.

1st thing i would do is find another mechanic.

Calling out the mechanic would cost money, which in his opinion wasn't worth spending.
He doesn't want he nice bits as he hasn't even seen them.

I guess, like he has that the timing chain has snapped.

The car is in sunderland John..... which is 200 miles away from me in Coventry

im driving up there tommorrow as i have to attend a wedding so will go and see the car too....

The car is in very good condition besides what has happened now.

It was mine before i gave it to the mrs to drive, regratably she didnt care for it the way i did, having a number of bumps scrapes etc....

as mentioned above i will be going up there tommorrow but without stipping the engine i wont be able to see anything anyway so its a catch 22...

get it fixed there which will cost in the region of £800-£900 or cut my losses strip as much as i can and scrap it...

i suppose i could get a trailer and bring it back to Cov but if it is going to be the worst case scenario im still going to be paying in circa £1k for it to be repaired...

I would try to get it back to Coventry and not have it looked at by the garage in Sunderland. Unless I've missed something you've never had any delaings with them previously (it's just the garage they recovered the car to?)

Using the power of this forum you need either:

1. a specialist in Sunderland to give it the once over
or
2. a trailer / transporter to get it back to Cov

the closest MB specialist to sunderland is either durham or newcastle. newcastle being the closest out of the two. maybe worth giving them a ring?

A couple of factors to take into account - what sort of overall mileage has the car done and what state is in structurally/ body paintwork wise with respect to rust. If its in good condition-- the question to ask is "if this hadn't happened how many more years is it good for?" then as others have said its worth finding another engine/donor car [sound mechanically mot failure] for the car. These 111 engines are very long lived so you have every chance of picking up a good one 2nd hand.

I would probably strip the good bits and let it go... You will easily spend £500-£1000 to replace the engine using a second hand part and W202's just arent worth anything now.

It had the nornal arches and just got a bubble of rust by the boot lock now, but ive kept ontop of the rust till now.

I was going to do the rust in the arches this summer, its not drastic just average i would say.

The car hasnt given me any problems in the past, and replacing it would be difficult 12.5 years and no major issues is relatively hard to compete with.

My in-laws have a local mechanic who is the guy that they reccomended to use he said he will strip the engine and see the extent of damage for £100 which aint to bad at least i will have peace of mind and will decide what steps to take after that.

which will be to either : strip as much as i can and scrap it
or bring it back to life with a second hand engine.

I was in sunderland yesterday, i cranked it over it cranked but sounded lifeless as mentioned before there wasnt any compression...

They are takling the car away as i type so see what the outcome is from there.

Thanks

Jay i see your point but the thing is if you buy another one whos to say that, that car will not need money spending on it.....

better the devil you know.....unless you got a cheap one for me ;)

but will wait and see what they say, then decide.....

Id say take Ian up on his offer! :)

Take the oil filler cap off and crank the engine over while watching the cam chain, that way you will know if the chain has snapped.
