Hi Team

Now I do not want you all to get the wrong impression of me BUT I was in LIDL (the poor persons store) this morning and picked up one of their flyers and have just located the item on their website:

Pocket PC SATNAV - 350 smackeroonies !!

I am tempted because my old Merc cannot take these new fangled command marlarkeys without severe surgery and something like this would also be useful on the bike (when I get it).

What do the experts on SatNav think? Is this worth a punt or are there some searching techie questions I should be asking LIDL. Apparently it does come with absolutely everything - no extras need to be bought.

Appreciate views/advice.

I know some very affluent people who shop at LIDL !

The fact that things cost so little there is probably directly attributable to the fact that they are so wealthy :D (whilst the rest of us waste our money in Sainsbury's, Tesco, & the like !!) - there are some very good products in LIDL as it happens - mostly very good quality German stuff, of course ;) ;))

The Sat Nav package looks interesting - although it is not one that I recognise, and the blurb does not specify that it comes with a GPS receiver - or is that supposed to be integrated ? I'd ask a few more questions before making a purchase.

Sorry I was actually being self deprecating - because I often pop into LIDL to see what they have on offer, paticularly for my home workshop. For example this is on offer next week Cordless Drill

I must remember to make more use of the wee icons :o to convey the hidden meaning behind the words ;) .

From what I read it comes with a GPS receiver. (The satnav not the cordless drill) ;)

I thought they only sold food?

I pass one (in Camberley) on the way home .... I might drop in and have a look at what they've got on offer.

The TomTom Bluetooth Navigator III with iPAQ 2210 on totalpda does sound like a better bet, although that price excludes VAT. TomTom is one of the best gps software packages available and the 2210 is one of the best PDA's.

For the Lidl one it doesn't say where the gps unit is, if its integrated or connected by a wire (rather than bluetooth). It also doesn't say if it has voice navigation and automatic re-routing.

You could always post the question on www.pocketgps.co.uk and see what the real experts say :)

my boss has the 5550 with TomTom BT and its fantastic!!! but that costs ££££££££££££

I have a 4150 on order (seems very similar to the 5550 with bluetooth and wireless lan but much smaller) and I'll be ordering TomTom III BT as soon as I get it.

Actually, your techy web write upwas very impressive but no way would I have a water cooled PC.

'm off to Florida in the Summer & hope to get around a bit, Key west, Miami Beach , Orlando, Cape Canveral etc.. Is there a pocket GPS device that covers USA ?

I've rented a Hertz car in the US with their 'Neverlost' and that worked well. Was my first taste of Sat Nav and really impressed me.

Cheaper still

Navman £139.99 Link

Oops, sorry Norman it IS just the software.
