I've rented a Hertz car in the US with their 'Neverlost' and that worked well. Was my first taste of Sat Nav and really impressed me.
I've prebooked as car with Hertz , a mid saloon do they all come with the neverlost system?

I have a 4150 on order (seems very similar to the 5550 with bluetooth and wireless lan but much smaller) and I'll be ordering TomTom III BT as soon as I get it.

4150 is a cracker Richard, replaced my old 3660 with one. Half the size and weight, finally true pocket size, Wifi, BT, great screen and fantastic battery life. Got TT3 and Emtac BT GPS on order from Totalpda, ordered lots of stuff from them in the past and never been disappointed

Cheers

This was a few years ago, but I don't think all cars have it, its an extra you have to pay for. If you look on Hertz.com it has details, looks like its $9 a day.

Thanks Andy for the info, looking forward to getting it. Is there a reason you went for the Emtac GPS unit and not the one that comes with the TomTom kit? Do you think you'll hard wire the gps unit so its on all the time?

thanks Richard, it looks like the satnav is a bolt on rathr than intergrated into the car. I'll enquire when we get t'th airport.

Yes that's the one I had in the Ford Taurus I rented. It worked well though, although the Sat Nav CD only covered California where I rented the car, not the rest of the US.

I went for the Emtac as it is came out very well in reviews and my colleague has one that seems to work extremely well. I will hardwire it in to avoid having to recharge it but I'm still wondering where to put it. The one I've seen works fine on the parcel shelf but I ain't got one and I don't want it on the dash anywhere. Might fix it between the two rear headrests on the seatback or in the oddments tray between the rear seats. Will have to make sure it's fixed down well though, don't want it flying off behind me when the roof's down :)

Closure

Hi

Thread originator here with closing remarks.

Well after much further research and lots of advice form this and other forums and their members (Steady Kinky!) and a refocus on what I actually wanted - I have bought the Garmin Street Pilot III.

I wanted a portable system but also wanted a weatherproof one that has a good user feedback from the motorcycle community. It was a helluva lot more spandoolees than the LIDL offer - but I got procurement approval from SWMBO so leapt at a purchasing opportunity.

I used it over the Easter weekend with great success. It is actually a piece of cake to use and it is a wonderful driving aid - lowers stress levels in t'car too!!

Thanks to all

HP Jornada with TomTom navigation

I bought a HP Jornada 928 PDA with built-in TomTom navigation plus a post-code and radar finder for about £350 on t'eBay a month ago. The sat nav system is excellent (you can see pics on Guydewdney's totalPDA link) - better than the £2k DVD sat nav system I had in my 2002 Shogun 3.2DiD - but you also get the usual PDA benefits and you can insert any sim card and use it as a mobile phone!

It came with a decent GPS receiver and all I've had to buy is a mount for a tenner (some eBay listings already include these). OK, there's a few wires hanging about but I can move it from vehicle to vehicle in seconds. :)

Do you think it is waterproof and up to the more rugged useage on a motorbike?
