hoping for some help!
noticed a rattling noise coming from under the car today - happened to be driving past a local quik fit (where the chaps are always helpful) they put it on the ramp and confirmed that one of the CAT's had gone.

seems my options are:
1. go to mercedes and bend over
2. buy a CAT from ebay and get someone to weld it

ive not got much experience with exhausts (ive paid for most other engine parts along the way) so was wondering if anyone had any thoughts.
if it helps im based in the Kingston upon thames area.
Thanks
Gareth

There is a 3rd option:bannana:
If it's one of your secondary cats, you could have both removed and a x-pipe fitted. It will make it a bit louder on acceleration but still be unintrusive inside.

EMP in St Albans are well recommended for exhaust work like this.

Buy a second hand cat, should bolt on/off easily enough. They normally go if they're hit (speed bump).

can anyone confirm that this would do?

the other thing to add is that the previous owner apparently had it de-restricted and chiped / mapped.I only bought the car on Friday and have no paperwork relating to this work. i'm wondering would it have any impact on fitting a new cat?
cheers

When I bought my e55K, the previous owner had supposedly had it 'derestricted' and remapped to 525 bhp. As with yours, no details available.

MSL's dyno says he lied; it's stock, near as dammit - 480-ish bhp at the flywheel. These things - mine and yours - are firkin' quick anyway, and your seller may also have been telling fibs.

The 'derestriction' is no more than deactivating the electronic limiter at 155 mph, and (possibly) the one at 186mph; I've read somewhere that a completely unrestricted E55K is good for just about 190 mph, and I dare say yours would do more, but the second restriction isn't really significant either way in the UK, unless you intend to kiss your licence goodbye, with probably a prison sentence as well...

If there was a cat there before, fitting a 'sports' cat now is unlikely to reduce performance.

There is of course an insurance issue. Insurance companies are well aware of the tuning potential of these cars, and if you have a significant accident are very likely to have the ECU checked to see if it's standard; if it's not, they will seek to avoid liability unless it has been declared as modified. The easy way to tell is either on a decent dyno, or by interrogating it with a STAR to see if it's a standard map.

Your best bet is to find the part number of the cat, you can do this by asking for a quote from a MB dealer for the cat, they should quote the part number. Then search for that part number on Ebay. Otherwise you could call a parts supplier ie Eurocarparts tell then what it is and they might give you the MB number. I wouldn't buy a cat like the above much better buying a second hand original unit or getting a pattern part. Thats the other option.

Thanks for help and apologies i realised reading your last post Lagerlout that i have not updated my profile. i dont have the CL anymore (although i wish i had held onto it!)
now in a CLK 500 convertible
cheers
