Hi there everybody! Im DR1VERS mate, I'm on the lookout for a Mercedes 190E preferably 2.0 auto/manual asap! I've just sold my car and i'm now without transport! Im scouring the auto trader website as well as ebay but thought i may as well ask in here as well. Anyone got a 190e on this page? What are your thoughts on them? cheers! :)

Hi and welcome :D They are a good solid car and well built.I was playing about with a 2.0 auto 190 yesterday that had 300k on the clock and it was driving very well all the electrics worked,no knocking or squeeking, and sill managed to pull a couple of wheel spins out of junctions :devil:Can you afford to go for a bigger engine as that would give a little more grin factor IMO.

Welcome mate..:)

You could always go for a w124 e200 etc...:D

Welcome aboard!

Cheers for the warm welcome guys:) My bidget is maximum £600 preferably less it seems like the biggest bargain to be had in the Merc world is the 190? I dont know much about them really apart from what I've absorbed from DR1VER! The biggest engine I've had on the road in the past two years is 1.2 due tio university sensibleness but I'm in my last year now and i'm sick of it!! Hence why i reckon the 190e 2.0 would bring a big smile to my face!! :D

word of warning

Buying one is easy.:) Running one is OKish if you DIY.;) Repairing one can be VERY expensive depending whats wrong. At £600 be prepared to inherit a lot of the previous owners problems. Just a word of warning if you are an impecunious student. Sorry.:(
ps
190's are rock solid if looked after properly but they are at minimum a 14 year old car and to get a sound one with a good history I think you need to pay at least £1000+

I have one that I bought to do up.
It is nearly finished and will be up for around that price.
PM me if interested.

I don't mind a bit of DIY, messing with cars is my hobby! There seem to be a few on autotrader for around £500 with 12 months MOT and low (for a solid merc) miles. I don't mind a low spec one and I dont mind a bit of a tatty one as long as its reliable!! :)

have u looked at spoted on ebay yet janner has one on there.

Welcome to the forum. If you manage to get a good 190E then keep it. They are rock solid. For preference I would get a 190E 2.6. Now there is a car and a half.

Welcome to the forum. I had a 190E 2.0 auto for 12 years and still regret selling it, I would personally not recommend a manual with the 2.0..I can't really point out things to look out for when looking for one as mine never went wrong :D

welcome to the forum....

theres a couple of 190 fanatics floating around here most of the time... (me included) check out the sig link.....

Welcome to the forum. I used to have a 190E auto and it was a fine car, solid, reliable, and performance was sprightly all things considered.

You've got a pretty tight budget there, so be realistic about what you're likely to get, which may be not much. As a general rule I'd go for an unmolested one rather than one which has been subjected to aftermarket alloys and/or body kits.

Manuals are best avoided, as is the non-E models, as they don't have fuel injection and would be completely gutless.

Good luck with your hunt!

Cheers fellas, yeah the budget aint big but im still a student, ah well!! i'd take a scruffy one as long as its been looked after, i like a challenge anyway!

welcome to the forum ,

THIS is the place to look

http://www.mercedes190.co.uk/

I bought one a couple of years back , here's the story from the other forum , which is pretty typical -

"I must have had the 190 for 1-1/2 to 2 years now , can't remember exactly ...

Paid £300 for it .

Put on 4 new tyres (£250 ish) + set of 15 hole alloys from breakers (£50) , new discs & pads all round (£150ish) , rear exhaust section (£75ish genuine M- .

1x new headlamp & indicator (£25 from scrappy) + o/s/f wing (£15 from scrappy already in right colour - had to wait till one turned up though) to repair accident damage from previous owner.

Replaced worn & collapsed drivers seat with perfect passenger seat from breakers (£15) in correct blue cloth finish - had to swap runners etc to get seat belt mounts etc right way round .

Bought a towbar for £25 on ebay and fitted it myself - good thing to have in case somebody tries rear ending you .

Have bought full set of springs + rubber shims (£150ish from dealership) yet to be fitted (TE going away on Friday & Fintail arriving , planning to do some work on 190 before starting on 'new' car , will get back to normality soon ) .

Spent £120 on welding for recent MOT ( both rear jacking points , 1 front jacking points , both front inner wings near strut tops) .

There's obviously been a few quid here & there on plugs , oil , filters etc but nothing untoward .

All work apart from welding has been done by myself ( I plan to get a MIG and teach myself soon ) so labour costs haven't been an issue .

There may well be other small items I've forgotten , but total expenditure of somewhat over a grand , including purchase of the car , really can't be bad for close on two years trouble free motoring - plus the car now looks so much better than when I bought it and has got to be worth double what I paid for it . Early (pre facelift) 190s in original condition must be a sure fire bet to appreciate in years to come .

I bought the car for my daughter's 21st which will be in October next year , by that time it will have had new paint and should be a well sorted , smart looking 190 . "

Free 190

Don't know if it's still available , but there's a member over on the M-B Club website advertising a 190 , FREE TO COLLECT - this would leave you a bit to spend on repairs ....

I don't think he will mind me pasting it over onto this forum....

"Hi,

I need a good home for the 190E, Black. Declared SORN at the moment, but might pass an MOT (only 200 odd miles since the last success).

Advertising for parts, as:

1) last time I used this car - earlier this year she had an oil pressure problem - once the speed went up above 60mph the pressure started to drop and continued to do so until the car was stopped, switched off and restarted. Then OK.
2) The exterior is average - the doors are a little rusty on the underside, but the chassis, floor pan and structure generally are good.
3) The heater matrix leaks - that's coolant into the interior, which as a result has been damp (plus the sun roof is slightly ill fitting). Basically, the black cloth interior is poor with plenty of mould
4) The heater fan has broken again, despite me replacing it.

It has brand new tyres on the front and the plate MIL 9940. Will anyone collect it and re-home? No payment would be expected! Seems a shame to crush her..

Sounds pretty cool but i need an MOT'd taxed car coz i need to be on the road as my car is getting picked up tomorrow!

What do you guys think to a 1.8 auto 190e? Theres one by me and im tempted to nab it but DR1VER has told me in the past that they're not so good. What do you think? As long as they are competant and can cruise on the motorway at decent revs and be just as reliable -are they the same motor just smaller engine? I need a car asap!

The 1.8's tend to be entry level cars with a low spec .

They do have less power than the 2.0 litre models (some people say they are underpowered) but they are still as well built as any 190 and should be just as reliable if they have been looked after . Any 190 will cope with normal everyday driving and cruise at legal motorway speeds with ease ( just don't expect the more basic ones to burn off hot hatches etc).

It really comes down to buying the first decent , straight car you come across which seems to have been looked after and running well rather than bothering about model and spec .
