My name is Mathew, ive had a merc previously, a C220CDI in 2004 from new. Did 90k then fell apart! Looking for a W124 but not sure whether to go petrol or diesel, either way must be six cylinder. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like a great forum, well knitted community. Looking forward to contributing.

Cheers guys / Girls

Hello Mathew

Really depends what you will use the car for and what your budget is. The large capacity petrols are silky smooth, pretty rapid and good value to buy because they are thirsty. Multivalve diesels very sought after and command a premium.

If you are looking for a minter start by looking at ************ or Charles ironside - they seem to source the best ones out there but you pay a premium for this. There are some good ones out there, but also a lot of dogs. Happy hunting.

Hello and welcome to the forum

Good luck with your search, the w124 estate is a very nice car. Stylish, reliable and practical, the six cylinder petrol is a very capable unit
They are very popular on this forum and there is a wealth of information and practical advice

Hi and welcome to the forum

Mathew

Welcome. As Mika says the 6 cylinder petrol is a great engine. It is thirsty, but it is pulling a huge amount of car.

There are some great experts on here will help you should you require it. Good luck with your hunt.

Cheers for all the advice guys.

Who is************. Do you mean Mr W124 himself, Mr Froome. Im looking at the white one on his site but cant decide if id get on with the interior.

When I had a 190E it used to be picked up by the sales manager for service so I always got his car for the day and it was invariably a W124 estate. I got to drive fully loaded 4matics, CE's and even the late 300D.

The 300D was extremely refined at the time and even quite nippy until the legal limit at which point spirited overtaking became a more risky proposition!

I quite fancy the idea of one of these as a retro-ride, but I imagine good ones a now as rare as hens teeth....

I was talking to Nick Froome today. He gets one or two 300d's a year which he would consider selling. Problem was they were expensive new and rarely had high spec - people bought them as workhorses so they got knocked about.
