I own a Porsche 911 Turbo (996) with low miles and with the way prices are going, I'm wanting to reduce mileage and buy a SL55 AMG where I won't be put off with adding mileage and detracting value.
1. I have a budget of around £20-£25k. Will this get men into a 55 AMG?
2. Common issues?
3. Reputable specialist from whom to purchase - recommendations please.
On the Porsche where I am on 911UK forum the golden rules are - have an independent PPI from a reputable Indy who knows the marque inside out and what to look for. Secondly, be aware of some of the brittle areas for each model range and look for examples that they have been sorted. Finally, I plan on doing an autobahn trip next year in the AMG rather than the Porsche. Are they really restricted to 155mph? Is this a car that can stand that sort of usage? IN Porsche there are some models in the water-cooled range I would not touch due to engine issue and the air-cooled range due to pricing going crazy for such old cars.
I plan on around 3-4k miles use in any case per annum. I'm not aware that the SL55 AMG has reached "modern classic" status as has the 996 Turbo, so my reason for buying is to use and enjoy it and not lose much in depreciation. I have a 2003 E220 CDI from new fully maintained by MB (I have not found Indy servicing to offer saving over main dealer to be honest). Different story with Porsche whereas Indy can be a saving - but because they use after-market or OEM parts from Euro Car Parts. The Indy MB guys I spoke to use genuine MB parts and the only saving might be labour but the main dealers are discounting labour on the older models such as mine in any case.
Any thoughts appreciated on my choice for the SL55 AMG. Do I stick with the R129 (or the other model R230?). I'm having to learn the MB language. Know the Porsche language inside out.
