Hi,

I'm new to the world of Mercedes ownership, picked up my fiest last night, it's a 2002 C Class 2.7 CDi Avantgarde. It's in great condition and a real bargain I feel. The only downside is, is that it only has one key fob/key. I'd like to get a second one so I and the wife can have own own.

Option one I guess is to get a dealer to order a new remote, I understand they need to come from the factory?

Or I could try eBay:
MERCEDES REMOTE INCLUDING NEW UNCUT KEY BLADE on eBay (end time 03-Sep-09 13:42:34 BST)

What would I need to-do to get the key cut (would keysmith do it?) nad more importantly, is it possible to code the keyfob to the car myself or do I need to go somewhere?

I'm in Wiltshire if that helps.

Many thanks
Ed

Key fobs need to be ordered from a dealer who will then order one from Germany.
The ones on e-bay cannot be programmed by dealers or anyone else so don't waste your hard earned.
The bad news is they cost around £200.

Welcome to the forum BTW.

DEFINITELY got to come from MB,been there, done that ! Its a rip-off,but you've no choice im afraid.

Hi Ed,

Welcome to the forum!! The information on here is fantastic, it's like a Wiki Mercedes portal!!!

Go direct to mercedes but try to haggle a little, I saved over £70 on a pair of wings through advice by a fellow forumer!

Better sort sooner rather than later, if you lose the key it will be way more than the £200 IMHO

D

You won't get any discount on the keys .... :(

Take all your documentation too ...

The only use for the eBay/secondhand keys is for the casing itself so I understand.

If you had a damaged/worn casing, the innards (small PCB) could be swapped to give your old key a new lease of life.

As everyone has said - new MB keys are now well over £200, but on the bright side you do get the nice new shiney chrome cased type

Many thanks guys for the warm reception, nice to know there is an active community that I can try to take part in.

So far I'm chuffed with my new purchase of the W203.

I've spoken to Mercedes and they were very helpfully and said it would be £215 all in to get a new key sent and coded. It seems I'll have to go this route, not much for peice of mind though should the other one get lost.

It would be the new style fob as they are retro compatible.

I also only have one key which i must get sorted,
but it will grate to pay £215

Already speaking the lingo. :thumb:

Welcolm to the forum.

So who gets the crome key, you or wife?

Always a bit concerned when there's just the one key - presumably the car checked out OK on a full HPI before you bought it?

Assuming your car supports it, I would get the dealer to unpair all keys and then pair just the one you have (plus a new one).

Otherwise "someone" might use the missing one to relieve you of the car in the next few days....
