i had a new sams unit fitted to my 2013 c220 as the old one suffered water congress but when new one was fitted the fitter said he couldn’t find any water damage or any signs of water getting in anywhere,so just wondered if anyone has had this issue before and any clue or ideas how this can happen ,cheers dean

I don't have a direct answer other than to say that water can follow a strange path.

My Kia suffered from water in the spare wheel well at the bottom of the boot for months... been to the dealer, replaced every seal I could think off, applied RTV solocon and gaffer tape everywhere, asked on the Kia forum....... it eventually turn out to be a very tiny gap at the base of the roof antenna.

Good luck...

Unfortunately for us car owners its probably down to the surface tension of water. e.g. Because of the relatively high attraction of water molecules for each other through a web of hydrogen bonds, water has a higher surface tension (72.8 millinewtons per meter at 20 °C) compared to most other liquids. Surface tension is an important factor in the phenomenon of capillarity. This phenomenon can be seen with the ability of water to run along the underside of surfaces without dropping off and also creep along wiring looms for example. The result is water entering a sealed structure at one point can be transported to almost anywhere in the structure if it finds a suitable path. :(

Condensation can cause water damage, some car door locks seize up because of it.

Wrap the SAMS unit if you can in a plastic resealable bag and at the collar us self amalgamating rubberized tape to seal it - its water proof trust me, then watch what happens..I can't remember what car it was I had, had this but the above was the solution and never happened again..

Think it might have been my VR6....

On a general note - be careful when wrapping electronic devices - some can be wrapped and sealed, but others may need adequate ventilation due to potential overheating issues.
