Hi all, I'm due to change the tyres on my '96 c180 Sport and was wondering if i could have a larger tyre fitted. i dont know much about tyre sizes other than i am currently running 205/60/15 (15"AMG rims) front and rear, what i would like to know is could i have wider tyres fitted I.E: 206/60/15 if thats right?

Any help would be much appreciated :)

205's are 205mm wide, 206's are only 1mm wider! 260 (the obvious choice for a typo) don't seem to be available as a size

Assuming you mean 260 width, or thereabout - the short answer is no - the 205's should be fitted on wheels width 5.5 to 7 inches - 265's on widths from 7.5 to 9 inches so there's no overlap in appropriate wheel size (i.e. you cannot fit 265 width tyres on your existing wheels, assuming they're the correct width for your current tyres of course)

Also you'd need to lower the aspect ration of the tyres if you're going for wider tyres (as sticking with 60 ratio tyres on a wider tyre leads to a larger circumference) - you'd need to go for 265/45/15's.

And this is before wondering about rubbing on arches from having such a wider tyre.

Confused? All the info and far better descriptions are here

The next 'width' up from 205 is 215.

It depends on the size of the AMG rims you have as to whether or not you will be able to fit wider tyres. I have 15" 7J (type II) AMG rims and at the last tyre change, I was told I could go up to 215 max. (I opted to stay with 205 because only 2 tyres needed replacing, and I wanted to maintain uniformity). Your best bet is to phone/call in to see a specialist tyre dealer who should be able to assess what you have. Personally, I have always found my local ATS-Euromaster to be pretty good with advice, but as with anything else, these things are generally down to site personnel. If you have 6.5J wheels, I would think that 205 is about the widest pattern you could fit on (safely!).

Also, it's not just getting the tyres on the rims, but whether any fouling is likely to occur. I think you should be okay there, because I am just upgrading my wheels to 16" with fitted 225/50 tyres and have been advised by an MB specialist they will be okay. However, I have a facelift model which may or may not have a different wheel arch design to your pre-facelift model.

Good luck!

*Edit - SG CL500 I posted same time as you, but clearly I was not so fast on the draw! What an amazing link that is - didn't know that site existed but 'bible' it certainly appears to be!

Thanks chaps, i think i'll refer to my local tyre dealer for further info. i've always gone up a size on bikes i've had in the past but cars are a different game altogether for me. Thanks again ;) :)

205/60R15 is the only size that AMG have in their approval document.. They are a huge tuning company so I would suggest that they have used that tyre size for a reason.. which your local tyre place may be unaware of!
