New Style MOT Certificates coming this month!

looks like one should now check the MOT validity online when buying a car as the "certificate" itself looks pretty worthless and easily reproduced.

I was thinking the same thing. The actual certificate is now going to be absolutely worthless because it is so easily faked.

So we are now reliant on performing an online check before attaching any credence to any certificate.

Exactly.

They do say that the paper certificate is no longer proof of an MOT and only the online check should be relied on.

Actually looks like a positive thing

Very true, i just downloaded the sample template in pdf format to have a look at what they are now like.

And if the garage print the detail via a laser printer, they couldn't make it any easier to copy!

Any piece of paper work is just too easy to fake these days.

And if you widely distribute special stationary a proportion will fall into the wrong hands.

Online makes much better sense.

I quite like how the online "sample" certificate has "SAMPLE" not rasterized and flattened... so if you open the pdf in adobe pro, click on sample and hit delete it should remove it...

Doh!

When I get tax from the post office, Mr Postie behind the counter doesnt seem to check anything online, he just looks at your documents before rubber stamping the tax disk.

Wont this just mean dodgy owners with cars without an MOT will just make up their own MOT certificate and insurance certificate on an inkjet printer and there will be even more seemingly legal cars on the road with no insurance and be mechanically unsound?

It won't be long before we have to check on-line to see if we've committed any criminal offences. If so then we'll have to take ourselves to jail.

Any dodgy paperwork will most likely eminate from the DALE (Server) FARM!

Checking any car's MOT status and MOT history on- line before purchase is essential regardless of what type of form the garage or test station gives out.

Being able to see previous failure and advisory records is extremely useful in understanding what has (or should have been) repaired and also lets you know of things that will require attention.

I really despair of the "oh we are being forced to use a computer to check things" attitude of some. In cases like this, as well as being able to check the road tax and insurance status of vehicles, it has made it far easier for people to find out significant information on what, for most is still a significantly expensive purchase.

You can now sign up for text reminders of when your MOT is due. MOT text reminder service : Directgov - Motoring

That will no doubt change in time.

It takes a long time to change bureacracy.

People are getting caught because of databases and not paperwork.

The paperwork hardly ever worked in the past.

The questions / moans should be why the practice of keeping the information centrally is being implemented so late on. Should have been done years ago.

Funny you should say that - that was the first thing I did - just to see a clear picture, you understand  What is even stranger, they bothered to chnage properties to resize the window (HATE THAT!) and centre it on your screen, but couldn't be bothered to set a minimum protection of the contents of the file :dk:

As far as DVLA forcing to check your MOT online - long overdue. When I went to buy my current A160, the seller (small dealer) was clearly surprised I had an advisory note from last MOT printed (which he conveniently forgot to mention) :bannana:

May I point you towards the Centralised NHS IT system?

In repsect of IT, the DVLA do in fact seem to be fairly well modernised.

Its all very well saying "go online" to check the mot validation but a lot of older people neither have nor know how to operate computers,my parents who are in there eighties fall into that category.

You could if there was one.

(There are bits of NHS IT that are centralised - some date back a long time - but I don't think that was what you were referring to)

That's why they've got you.:thumb:

A lot of older people manage online rather better than a lot of the population give them credit for. The ones that don't should be able to use a phone to ring up and check.

You are right which is why this system should have actually been live 5 years ago!!!

Absolutley which is why it appears to state that on the certificate.

Just think how easy it would be for some to setup their own similar looking website with any old URL that contains the text 'checkyourmot' and the relevant link on this paper copy!
