By way of example, I have a 2011 E350 CDI. For my use case of around 12k miles a year, whilst I'm not looking for a replacement, I'm thinking if I had to replace my E class (e.g. accident write off), then I could even look at a circa 2011 S500/63/65. The cost of the mpg penalty using 55 vs 25mpgs is 'only' about £1.5k per year. Which I could afford, and would be a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a much newer car for £35k.
Those 12k miles are done in 140 miles a day chunks, so something like the S class is appealing. If it was head ruling heart, I'd buy the Lexus I linked to for reliability.
