I don't understand how they can foul an otherwise stock setup - except to say that there was no pre-facelift C240 sport and the C230k/240/280 etc have vented front discs instead of solid like the smaller capacity models - is this why the facelift sport models came with a different, 16" wheel as standard?
Shude,
I've now got to the bottom of all this and what you say is absolutely correct. The V6 models (i.e. introduced at facelift date - mid 1997) use larger front brake calipers than the lower engine size models, as well as vented discs that you mention. That's why the C240 (and C280) Sport models were fitted with 16" AMG Type II wheels - to avoid exactly the problems I have experienced!
The pre-facelift Sport was fitted with 15" Type II's because there were no V6's at that time and all used the standard smaller calipers.
So a cautionary piece of advice to anyone out there who has a V6 on 15" wheels. If you're thinking of upgrading the wheels, ensure you go for minimum 16", as it is likely the only ones that will clear the caliper are the ones you already have!

Alex
FYI - I have established there is no problem with the rears as these use fixed calipers with separate pistons each side for each pad.
