Anyone had a car rental in NZ and used the 'Tourism Radio' option and is it worth having?

As a side issue if you are planning to pop on down Druk why don't you stay in touch, happy to help wherever I can.

Never heard of Tourist Radio until your post so I can't give much insight that way but if it isn't too expensive I can see it helping quite a bit to be honest. Saves reading, can listen to it on the run....

PM sent :D

I had this option on an organised self drive tour of the South Island. It was connected to the sat nav and never actually worked. I just borrowed a normal satnav and guided myself...having done research on what I wanted to see...

Oh and enjoy it - New Zealand is stunning:

A photo I took at Milford Sound in poor weather last year:

You're pretty good with the camera cobber!

Do you live local?

No, am UK based but travel a lot (how I manage to put 22,000 miles a year on my E class I don't know, but most of the miles are from South Wales to Heathrow!

First year, I drove a Mitsubishi Outlander and stayed in Hotels. My advice? Do it like I did it this year. Hire a Ducato camper van or similar and have the freedom to wander. Many campsites are very well equipped complete with wifi and BBQ area.

Don't do as I did and get caught driving 137kph on Highway 1. Another 3kph and my first trip wouldn't have happened as they would have removed my ability to drive in NZ. That was in a ****ty little Toyota too, on a few days on the North Island....

Camper van is definitely the way to go. Hire one of the big vans and they are warm complete with gas oven and double bed...

Take a trip down Lake Pukaki and see more stars than you could ever imagine...

Hotels hold you back...

Mmmmm, E320 Cabriolet country for sure! :) With a pup tent in the boot that is.

Can you normalise the colours on the lower shot...??

Give me a call, Derek. I spent nearly four months riding my bicycle around the north and south islands and I can tell you exactly where to go.......in the nicest possible way, of course!

NZ is a fantastic place to visit, You will absolutely love it!

Any other time I would agree with you completely. But I spend a good deal of time dragging a big tin box round Europe. This is all about relaxing, so hotels it is. All planned, booked and paid too. We went to Audley Travel and let them get on with it...job done.
