Hi
Well I have just departed from the Mercedes Dealer having left my wallet with him (or at least the contents)
So I now own a 98 C240 as my first Mercedes, paid too much I'm sure but I just fell in love with the car, Silver with full leather, Bi Xenons, and electric everything.
Just wanted to ask if there was anything I need to do or look out for on this model so I can keep her in tip top shape for a long time to come.
Also what kind of MPG can I expect in the real world?

Congrats on your new purchase, I've just moved out of a 2000 C240 Sport, it was a great car, I cant give you mpg figures but I managed at best to get 330 miles out of a tank of fuel with mixed driving.
I had mine for about 18months and it was a very reliable car, mine did eat tyres and they were expensive as they were 18"'s.
I don't know what mileage yours has but i recomend a gearbox oil drain and a new filter to be fitted......The C does have a few scary stories by a few people when the gearbox goes bang!!!

Fantastic choice of car mate but then I would say that


I would go over the bodywork for signs of rust, the car should be okay but there have been quality issues especially in areas around the boot lock and wheel arches etc. I got some rust on my nsr wheel arch treated under warranty earlier this year.

The engines are fairly well bullet proof, so I am told by a reliable source. However the MAS (air mass sensor) can cause some strange symptoms and they are a fairly common unit to fail. BTW what mileage is your car currently on? *EDIT* Ah ha I can see now she's on 51k

The 5spd electronic auto gearbox is allegedly sealed for life but some and I am one of them believe it is better to get a specialist to change the oil every 60k miles or so.

Umm as for fuel consumption, mid 30's mpg on a steady motorway cruise, and high teens to low 20's mpg if you're driving like a hooligan around town.

I didn't think the '98 W202 ever came with Bi Xenons, I think you'll find you have Xenons for dipped beam and halogen lights for main beam. Hehe enjoy those I know a few here who would give their right arm for a set of Xenon lights.

Post exactley what you have and we can tell you how rare a car you have!! Have you the digital climate control or the analogue dials?

Park sensors?
Heated Seats?
Electric Seats?
Rain Sensor?
Rear Blind?
Folding Mirrors?

At 51k miles she should have a good few miles ahead?
Full Black leather interior
Heated and full electric seats (cant believe even the head rest is electric.)
Normal dial climate control.
I dont think it has any of the other things you have listed but to be honest I just sat in the car, took it for a test drive and wrote a cheque, I just fell in love with her. On the bodywork front she is absolutly mint, went over her with a fine tooth combe and could not find ANY imperfections.
Thursday next week is D Day to pick the car up so I will put some pics on next week end.
What model is my car W202??

Bi Xenons use Xenon light for both dipped beam and main beam. Usually by a mirror that moves to let more light out.

Xenons typically use Xenon light for dipped beam and halogen bulbs for main beam.

At 51k miles she should be solid loads of miles left. I got mine with 55k on the clock. Just for comparison I got a minor 'A' service at approx 56-57k miles and the a major 'B' service at approx 70k miles. Mine's just currently turned 74k. A services are cheap (£140ish) whereas B services are much more exbenzive (£450ish) and depending on what other maintenance is required the bills can get quite frightening, worst I had in one go was the 72k mile B service - £950 Fortunately they don't occur often.

Yeah I like the full leather interior too I don't have 'leccy seats or heated seats though.

Is your car a sport/elegance/esprit trim? If you have a carbon fibre look trim and ivory dials in the instrument cluster then it's a sport model.

As your car is a '98 year model it's designation is W202. It's also known as a post facelift W202 as the range had a major revamp in 1997.

If you really want anorak details, your VIN number will start WDB202026 2F *ahem* the trailing set of numbers will be unique to your car. Also because yours is a C240, the engine model type is M112.910

Ahh - another Silver Elegance owner ! Well done

No, seriously - the differences in spec are minimal . . Wood Trim on the Elegance, and Carbon Trim on the Sport. Your suspension will also be slightly less firm than the Sport trims, and a couple of millimetres higher.

There's also the Classic, which has less kit as standard, although everything being an option on these cars you get exactly what the original owner specified at the factory, so it does vary tremendously.

You should have puddle lamps in the front doors, and illuminated vanity mirrors as standard on the elegance though !

It's the comfy/luxury side of the range. Basically you get two tone bumpers with some extra chromy bits, chromy door handles, the car sits on standard springs and you will have a wood trimmed interior with black dials.

To compare with mine, mine has single body colour bumpers, dark grey door handles, my car sits on lowered sport springs and has a carbon fibre look interior with ivory dials.

There are other minor differences too but only cosmetic.
