No SL For Me... :(

Sounds like you've decided against the Crossfire, but one thing to add, the Crossfire SRT-6 actually has broadly the same supercharged 3.2 engine as the SLK32 AMG. Whilst it may not have the quality image of a german marque - some of the engineering is shared, and you can buy it for buttons and bottle tops in relative terms. I quite like the look of them too.

Its on the list to check out - I think I'd be daft not to.

Sadly its not my choice of car even though I will be paying for it as I wont be driving it all the time.

And I don't want to buy a car and have SWMBO complain about it all the time...

I know she would love an SLK or an XFire...

Now added to the options list... A Mini...

Do merc do a trackday or similar?

I need to get her hooked! :D
  My Man...... go for it :) :D :D

I know a good divorce lawyer ;) (I don't really)

Driving must be an enjoyable experience and if the better half doesn't feel comfortable in a bigger car then so be it.

Good luck
John

Malcolm, have you got a reference for this? I have the width for the R230 as 1829mm, slightly less than the s-class.

The 02-03 and the 06-04 catalogues give the width as 1827 without the mirrors and 2045 with.

The 06-06 book gives the width without the mirrors as 1827 and 2033 with.

As no one loves me I cant measure it myself, i have no one to hold the end

B&Q do those self propelling tape measures these days...

Its not the ACTUAL width, its the PERCEIVED width thats the thing. Somes cars LOOK bigger/wider/longer than others, but a tape measure often says differently. Mercedes cars LOOK bigger than they are because of their design AND you expect them to be bigger. Its a trick of the mind.
I think your wife could be suffering from this delusion. Explain it to her over a candlelit dinner in a small Italian Bistro and I am sure she will see sense. If not, at least you have got a good meal out of it.

I tried to explain that everything looks bigger in the showroom... 9Twas too dark to look out side) Need to go when its light I reckon

I do have a super one that stays up straight when I pull it all the way out

I went down to the garage and measured from the mirror to the wall and subtracted the distance from the wall to the other mirror and it is 2060, and yes I can count. Maybe I am feeding it to well, or it does not get enough exercise.

Theres a joke in there somewhere...

Oh no there is not.

During a carnival I had two girls in bikinis on the roof of the van with a big sign saying "If you cant do without it,give us a ring"

So when the local vicar walked over and said that he thought it was in poor taste, I got out ,looked at it and said, "Oh I did not see it that way" he went red and walked off

ha ha ha ha!

Porsche 911 ?
Out-do the guys down the street with the boxster.
Should tick all the boxes.

Cheers - it's the "with the mirrors" part that I didn't get, which is why it sounded too wide to me .

LOL! I hear Liza Minelli is always on the lookout ;).

Just the price of the thing really...

With a decent finance deal I could get one for £750 a month but I'd have to stick at least £8k down as a deposit and have a huge baloon on it...

So that means a cost of £26k over 2 years

The problem is clearly that you have included her in the decision at all. Are you both sharing the cost? If not, then you pick.

A mini? What she wants is a fashion statement, not a car, hence all the refusals and excuses.

The hot/short list:

A Mini Cooper S
Chrysler Crossfire
Lexus SC430
SLK 350
Porsche Boxster S
SL500 :D :D

From that shortlist its got to be either the SLK350 or The Boxster.
I would go for the SLK if it were my choice. Simple matter of rejecting the dross and fillers (BTW - that doesnt include the SL - its just a BIT too big).

Give her the choice between the SLK or an Ariel Atom or a Radical SR3. That should make it a bit easier for her.
