Noisy Fuel Pump

For the last few weeks I noticed an increase in noise from what sounds like the fuel pump - to the point I can hear with the engine running when I pull up at a junction.

I mentioned this to the dealer the other day when they were replacing a bit of faulty trim and they fobbed me off as though I was being ridiculous.

When travelling to Bristol and back at the weekend I had a message come up on the dash saying "clean the fuel filter". I've now mentioned this to the dealer and they are ordering in a new pump for me.

Anyone else had this on the 350CDi lump?

Would a faulty pump bring up that message?

P.S. Only done 5600 miles!!!

The fuel pump on modern Mercs are "in tank" units and have a integrated fuel filter and level sensor. e.g. FUEL TANK WITH ATTACHMENT PARTS FUEL SYSTEM Chances are some sensor is giving a low fuel pressure reading which might be caused by a blocked pump filter or dodgy pump. Either way should be cured by replacing the entire unit. Since I assume the car is still under warranty complete replacement would be the surest cure.

My E320 was making the same noise. Replaced the fuel filter and noise went away. Apparently I filled it with bad diesel from an old fuel station as I was getting check engine error too.
