Popped into my local dealer and spoke with the Service Manager to ask if they would update the firmware on my 2008 S211 as a customer relations exercise (given the amount I have spent there in the past) Seemed very receptive to helping out if possible, but has just called to say that the licence fee they have to pay Mercedes is £125!!! I just can't justify that cost plus whatever they will charge for the work, even if it is reduced from normal!

Ah well - hope my friends all live on roads built before 2008...…… :)

The latest firmware is 09/29 (I think thats right) which was produced at the end of 2009. If you have that you can upgrade the maps yourself with the purchase of the latest map dvds. Often available from the usual suspects...

MB should be able to update the firmware (only) for free.

That is what I was trying to achieve - but the service manager said as it was more than 3 years old they had to pay a licence fee to Mercedes of £125. Or maybe he did not want to do it......

The Service Manager clearly does not know the difference between Firmware update and Maps update....

As others said, the Firmware update is free (bar the tech's time). No license fee to pay.

The Maps update on the other hand is obviously free only for the first 3 years, after which you need to purchase the maps DVD.

Time for a trip to Lightwater...? They won't do it for free I don't think :) but they will definitely get it done for you :thumb:

Had our 2008 SLK done soon after we got it last Nov. Can't lay my hands on the invoice at the moment but IIRC it was £50 charge for the time hooked up to their machine for the firmware update & £99 for the latest maps disc

See this thread: Comand ntg 2.5 Memory Cards and Music DVD's

Post 35 is mine, and contains the information you need for a FREE update (well, paid for by MB) of an NTG2.5 (the version with an SD card slot). My (then) car was a 2009 S211; if you have an earlier COMAND, it may well not apply, though.

The original reaction I got was "Oh no we don't", but eventually became "Oh, all right, we do then".

Interesting.

So you got MB to update the COMAND firmware on your 2009 car in 2018 free of charge?

I wouldn't have expected them to do this for free once the 3 years new car warranty expired... let alone 6 years later.

Well done.

Indeed I did. I don't know exactly what the TIPS document says, or why it is still current, but it did the trick. I came by the information on the forum, of course, but I can't find my original source; I had enough trouble finding my post.

Sturgeon was kind enough to send me this which I think is what you may be referring to?

according to Question 10,Answer 9 in this; http://www.mercupgrades.com/COMAND+APS+NTG2+5+FAQ-faq-14.html the update should be free and there's a TIPs document to support this.

9. I am trying to update my maps but it wont work.
If you get the message "The navigation update DVD is not suitable for the system or the system software" this is a known fault because the firmware in your unit does not recognise the new maps. The system must be updated to the latest firmware (using Star Diagnosis, the Mercedes diagnosis system (01/2010), and if it still does not work the dealer must install the map disks that were supplied with his June 2008 Star Diagnosis release. Mercedes dealers should not charge for this, tell them there is a TIPS document number GI82.85-P-046208 saying they should not charge.

hmmm
i quoted a tips document to them and they said it only applied to cars less than 3 years old.

If you have an NTG2.5, they're wrong. It may be, of course, that they only get paid a paltry rate for the job, so they don't want the work. Ask to see the service manager and take it up with him. .

...and ask him to show you where it says that it is limited to cars up to 3 years old.
